I don't know where you got the idea thatthe 18 wheelers hate the expeditors.
I have them coming up to me all the time and asking about the business.
How am i doing,making any money,you know the usual crap.
But then i drive a D unit,so that may have something to do with it.

Perhaps someone who sees the sign could give a clarification.. is it actually no Expediters period, as in D units also, or simply no Expediter vans they don't want in the truck lot.

I've seen places that didn't want a van taking up a truck spot, (understandable)but I've never seen one who minded a D Unit parking with the 'big trucks'.

when i started in feb 92 had a couple of truck stops rest why are you eating in driver's area as i told them i drive a truck and on a time deliver and have to go, they said next eat in other part of truck stop and a couple of drivers said if he has to leave the area we will leave to and not come back

also had trouble at a ta once and show them how many times i stay there and how much i spend in there place and they change there tune
and had a couple of others add to this and they were surprize how much
money it was

Saying that 18 wheelers hate expeditors is really stereotyping. I drive and 18 wheeler and I am an expeditor. However, I have friends in C and D units and they do not get the respect they deserve from a lot of drivers, however, this is also true of other groups....women, JB Hunt, Schneider etc. Just remember some people are just unhappy and looking for a reason to pick at someone. Also remember that most of the people who hassle B,C and D units are making less that at least the C and D units and possibly the same as the B and they don't even know it. They are just ignorant and there is no law agaist it, so ignore them. Do be careful though, I have a friend that a big truck tried to run off the road one night (3 times).

Put All Types in search on this site and check the archives . They rip off everybody that works for them . They even rip off people that decide not to work for them by not returning the outrageous $90 they ask in advance for a physical . Everybody wonders how they stay in business and out of jail . I was listening to the fm this week and heard a discussion about a book on sociopaths . I learned that 96% of people have a conscience . The other 4% are sociopaths and using other people anyway they can to their advantage doesn't phase them at all . The first ones I thought of on hearing this was All Types .

I've run the road with many big truck drivers. Yes you are right when saying that statement is stereotyping the big truck drivers. After becoming friends with many I ask them (the ones who don't like straight truck drivers) why the big truck drivers always seem to pick on the D units. Most tell me it's not the expediter’s per-say (because most don't have a clue what an expediter is), but those who rent u-hauls, or the campers running the roads with little or no experience that they are really targeting. After putting up with someone who shouldn't be driving a D-unit, or something similar, for many years, to the big truck drivers they all look-a-like.

Another type they like to pick on is the drivers who have CB Radios, that are intimidated by them (the CB's), who don't know the lingo, or refuses to turn them on. To the big truck driver, this is a sign of being a rookie. Remember that radio is the drivers’ lifeline, and in my opinion every driver on the road should have it in their trucks, vans, or cars, and know how to use it.

Ya! I agree the language on the CB is bad but 90% of the time if we other drivers ignore those A-Holes; they will quit or drive out of range.

The one thing that will shut most big truck ignoramuses up, is when I tell them how much money I make running around with a van, and how little they are making pulling that big truck around.

Then I ask why they are driving that big truck in the first place.
Reason being, most drivers who I call forced drivers are doing it because they do not have the ability or skills to do anything else, let alone be an expediter (everyone you talk to who doesn't know what driving is all about, thinks ANYONE - I MEAN ANYONE CAN DO IT, - little do they know!!!). Remember, there are drivers for the love of it, and there are those who do it because they can't do anything else, so they try being a driver, until they get a taste of it.

Getting back to the topic the same applies to people who own truck stops. For some reason they think (not all) the big truck drivers are the ones spending all the money, on the fuel, and the tourists are spending it on the other end.

Broompilot also brings up a very good point about the impressions some expediters who drive vans leave.

I've been going to the FTW Travel plaza for years and have used their clean and spacious showers many times. The food is nothing to write home about but there is an excellent diner across the street.

During the past year, the place has been going thru a renovation which has expanded into the not so spacious parking lot. Contractor trucks and a dozen or so expedite vans were leaving little space for the other 4 wheeler car/truck restaurant patrons, so the owners created an area adjacent to the rear of the fuel desk for the expedite vans.

The referenced No Expedite Van sign refered to the restaurant parking area and not the entire truckstop. I have never observed any big truck/little truck animosity at this location and it continues to be a popular and safe layover location for trucks of all sizes.

Hey, Don't lump all Truckers, as the same way I don't lump all Expeditors/truckers with the same paint brush. Whether it's an Expeditor, or Trucker it's a matter of consdiering where it came from. We all deliver goods, whether it's in a Van or Big Truck. When you see a courier van speed pass you and then pull in at the last minute. When you been in a long line up for the last 30-45 min.. ie Border. It does tick you off when you see some commercial driver pull a stunt like a 4 wheeler would pull in a construction site when the sign says, left lane close...Just my 00.02

You couldn't have stated that better Tony. I know many people who think driving a truck/van/expediter is just like driving a car. I am quick to enlighten them that a driver can and will be called upon to be an accountant, hazmat expert, mechanic, an expert in load securement and safety, communications expert :+ , navigator, company public relations rep, customer service specialist, and otherwise all around miracle worker... THEN he has to drive the truck!

and.. as you said, some love their work, and wouldn't do anything else, and then there are those miserable old farts who feel they can't do anything else... so they're here, and they're going to make everyone else as miserable as they are... or at least those who dare to enjoy their work!

Here I have to throw in my 2 cents. When I see selfish drivers zoom past all those who are waiting their turn, I always hope that this time, NOBODY will let them in - but someone always does! Not me - I refuse to encourage the jerks, and they will NOT get in front of me. That said, I have seen signs saying "- lane closed ahead- use both lanes to merge point" and I have to admit, it's a much quicker way to do it. Just like in kindergarden - everyone taking turns, aww, it's so nice when it works! Especially cause it takes all the fun out of it for the selfish jerks! Cheri

If the sign says "Use both lanes to merge point " , they are SUPPOSED to run up the lane that is going to close . I bet you saw that in PA . I agree with your opinion though . I liked the sign that said " Left lane closed ahead . No passing ." Now if they would just have patrol cars to enforce that .

Sorry if it seemed like I was dogging all big truck drivers, that wasn't my intention. I use to drive big truck for a little while until I realized it wasn't for me so I know how frustrating it is to have 4 wheelers cut in front and expect you to stop 80,000 pounds on a dime, it aint gonna happen. So personally I try to give big trucks all the room that they need to do what they have to do. And yes I have had big truck drivers show me the same respect that I try to show them. And I have had them ask me how business is and if I like expediting. There is always going to be those bad apples that make life on the road miserable for everybody else.
