Military to Pledge Oath To Obama, Not Constitution

Jumping in Pools: Military to Pledge Oath To Obama, Not Constitution
Michele Chang

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is extremely frustrated with orders that the White House is contemplating. According to sources at the Pentagon, including all branches of the armed forces, the Obama Administration may break with a centuries-old tradition.

A spokesman for General James Cartwright, the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, states that the Obama Administration wants to have soldiers and officers pledge a loyalty oath directly to the office of the President, and no longer to the Constitution.

"The oath to the Constitution is as old as the document itself." the spokesman said, "At no time in American history, not even in the Civil War, did the oath change or the subject of the oath differ. It has always been to the Constitution."

The back-and-forth between the White House and the Defense Department was expected as President George W. Bush left office. President Obama has already signed orders to close Guantanamo and to pull combat troops from Iraq. But, this, say many at the Defense Department, goes to far.

"Technically, we can't talk about it before it becomes official policy." the spokesman continued. "However, the Defense Department, including the Secretary, will not take this laying down. Expect a fight from the bureaucracy and the brass."

Sources at the White House had a different point of view. In a circular distributed by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, the rationale for the change was made more clear.

"The President feels that the military has been too indoctrinated by the old harbingers of hate: nationalism, racism, and classism. By removing an oath to the American society, the soldiers are less likely to commit atrocities like those at Abu Ghraib."

"We expect a lot of flak over this," the classified memo continues. "But those that would be most against it are those looking either for attention or control."

The time frame for the changes are unknown. However, it is more likely that the changes will be made around the July 4th holiday, in order to dampen any potential backlash. The difference in the oath will actually only be slight. The main differences will be the new phrasing. It is expected that the oath to the Constitution will be entirely phased out within two years.

ps: i'll bet if you look at the keywords, chances are its bs, but do really know for sure....

somehow i think this is a load of hooieee. just as the pres takes an oath to 'protect' the constitution, so do all who take an oath to serve the country. the military serves the country ... not any person. the relationships are complicated, but involve civilian control of the military, "commander in chief" congress -- congressional oversight funding approval of general officers, etc.

if its not, it just shows the lack of understanding by those in the white house...

I'm inclined to agree, but does anyone remember the Obama speech from YouTube that I and a couple of others posted during the campaign in which BHO promised to emasculate the military? We conservatives can't help but be a little paranoid considering he's the most liberal and inexperienced president the country's ever had. He's also totally inexperienced with military affairs, having never served in any branch. This might be worth keeping an eye on, however unlikely it might be.

Yeah, we do know for sure, and so do you (man, at least I really hope you do). Not only is the original Blog entry clearly labeled as "satire", it's from the same creative writer that posted these gems:

Jumping in Pools: Guns to Be Banned for Elderly
Jumping in Pools: Obama "Genetically Superior" Say Scientists
Jumping in Pools: Obama to Launch "America Scouts"

At times, Jumpingpools is right up there with The Onion - America's Finest News Source in their creative satire, but for the most part, it's real hit and miss.

I am well aware that this is most likely bs, but, my statement still holds true. IF, I was still in the service of the Nation, and IF I were to recieve such an order, the only salute that Obama or any President that would have the oddasity to issue such an order would get, would be a proud and loud, "Flip of the Bird" !!!! As an officer you could get away with that, but an enlisted man takes a different oath than an officer.

You are of course correct as far as military law goes. As a "MAN" my law takes precidence. That is why I only did one enlistment in the Military. I am too head strong and would never do anything that goes against my beliefs. The military and I had a great 3 year relationship. They stayed out of my hair (what little I was allowed) and I stayed out of thiers. LOL. Hey, if Obama was passing by me in his motorcaid and it was -15F and I "mooned" him, would that be a "Blue Moon"? Layoutshooter
