NLM has sent e-mails to there carriers wanting to know how many would be interested in taking freight into and out of Mexico. At 1st I thought great, it may help getting loads out of the Texas area. Then it hit me. The U.S. and Mexico border would become like the U.S. and Canada border. In other words Mexican carriers will be free to grab up a lot of our freight. In the words of Ross Perot " you here that big sucking sound, that's jobs leaving the U.S. if NAFTA passes". What do you think this will do to your future in this industry???

Dave, I know it's being done to a degree already. BUT, to the best of my knowledge, NLM does not have Mexico based carriers signed on YET. As soon as they have a problem getting shipments into or out of Mexico, they will be signing them up. In other words loads going from Detroit ( or else where) into or out of Mexico, will be for 1 peso, per mile. That is going to be a major problem. Watch and see.

Panther had a load that transferred down in Nagalas and put on another Panther truck that could go into Mexico. Not sure how true but the truck coming out bumped us with a first out for taking that load over the border. Kinda sucked as we had to go up to Pheonix to get out. After the fact I wonder if it was a former Conway truck. Not sure other than we lost our board position. Number two down there isn't as good as the first out of Pheonix.

Truck purchased on eBay racks up 39 violations
“There was something amiss†Thursday in Cromwell, CT.

Authorities used those understated words after receiving a call from a trucker who noticed a tractor-trailer at a service station with blatant violations, according to the Middletown Press.

Officers responded and promptly called the state Department of Motor Vehicles, who later issued 39 violations on the truck.

The driver of the truck in question was Victor Alonso-Malavez, 42, of Juquipilco, Mexico, who spoke little or no English, according to the newspaper.

Through a cell phone and a translator, Captain Roy A. Nelson of the Cromwell Police Department determined that Alonso-Malavez had traveled by bus from south-central Mexico to Providence, RI, to pick up the truck he had bought on the online auction site eBay.

Alonso-Malavez reportedly paid $2,500 for the 1994 White, which authorities determined had a rotting frame and extensive brake violations.

Alonso-Malavez had also bought two other vehicles – a Ford Ranger and Ford Explorer – which were secured in a 1987 Great Dane trailer by their parking brakes only, authorities said.

The driver was cooperative with authorities, the newspaper reported.

Alonso-Malavez had a federal driver’s license from Mexico and was legal to be in the U.S., but the truck was not registered, Ernie Bertothy, a Connecticut DMV spokesman, told “Land Line Now†on XM Satellite Radio.

It’s unlikely that the White will ever see the road again.

“Some of the major violations concerned the brakes,†Bertothy said. “The brakes were out of adjustment, there were loose brake chambers and oil-soaked linings to name a few. In addition, there were broken springs, and a rotted and rusted frame. Obviously these issues violated state and federal law and resulted in out-of-service orders and infractions.â€

Alonso-Malavez was fined $1,114 for the violations.

Police did not return calls from “Land Line Now†about the driver’s whereabouts as of Friday afternoon.

So, colour me confused.
There are all sorts of posts on this board lamenting going to Canada and how you Americans hate it so much. Yet, Mr(ms?)HillTop says that Canadians are taking "HIS"(her) freight?
Mexicans are supposed to IF QUALIFIED be able to enter and take freight TO AND FROM Mexico. No American even wants to go there.

Do you want that freight or not?
How are drivers from your neighbouring countries stealing your freight?

Your future will not be stolen by drivers who are not American citizens. The US Immigration Service will ensure that. The laws are strictly enforced now; and are being toughened all the time.

Maybe we should go back to the pre-dereg days.
An American driver would pick up a load in ...say...Ohio and haul it to Detroit. A Canadian tractor would bob-tail across the bridge; pick up the trailer and haul it to the Canadian destination, including the waiting time at Customs. No PARS back then; put in an entry and wait.

That was the old system.
The Canadian Customs compound in Niagara Falls was full of US tractors waiting for their trailers to be returned by a Canadian tractor. Americans weren't happy with that and demanded to be able to go to Toronto with their loads.

Trucking in North America requires the ability to cross borders.
That is the reality.

Bob, that's all well and good, being a Canadian. You can pick up in Miami and deliver to Toronto, as can we. There's a bit of a mismatch of American v Canadian miles there, but it's something most of us agree that's good for both countries. Being that the US is the "meat" in the middle of the sandwich, talk about the same thing from "the other slice of bread" leaves us in the middle with little meat... kinda like an Arby's. So, what if that Mexican driver can pick up in Montreal and take it to Mexico City? That gravy train to Laredo that got you big American miles is now given to someone who will run it for next to nothng. That doesn't bother you?

I thought the giant sucking soundfrom the south that Ross Perot mentioned ended up being all the welfare checks going to New Orleans.

I guess what bothers me is the thought of the mexican driver coming here and being able to run without the same standards that we (US and Canada) all have to abide by.

With Canada and the US there is some harmonization of carier rules and a well established receipricating licensing agreements but with Mexico there is none or very little, NAFTA was supposed to force this on Mexico but they have moved backwards.

Little is done to stop some of the unsafe drivers from arriving here in the US and Canada and if they get in trouble, we have little or no recourse to pursue them legally or have the help from Mexico to do so. Thier licensing system is still in the dark ages, as is thier regulatory agencies (I had to deal with their 'FDA' and it was the most corupt thing I have ever seen and this is with Billions of dollars pouring into Mexico).

I would rather see the forced harmonization of mexico's laws and regulations with the US and Canada's first as NAFTA was supposed to do before one driver comes here. It all has to do with Safety!!
