While I only skimmed the McCarthy report [and BTW, he DID cause a blacklist of many talented Hollywood writers & directors, among them my beloved Ring Lardner, and with the help of then Screen Actors Guild President Ronald Reagan, who gave up the names of everyone he had ever seen discussing Marxism], my eye was caught by the headline "Air Force tells servicemen not to read stories about NSA data collection". That seems outrageous - we don't like censorship in America! so I read that one.
And gollygee, what does the actual order say? It says that downloading the classified documents found on sites such as the Guardian [original source], may be considered illegal.
It did not prohibit servicepeople from reading articles on the subject.
I'm doubting whether it's 100% accurate on the subject of McCarthy, as well.

That's like saying there's no real difference between bottles of vintage wine & plonk: just because you don't have the ability to discern the differences, [much less appreciate them] doesn't mean they don't exist.

I had to do it. :)

Concerns about Communist penetration of the federal government, and about Soviet espionage, existed before anyone outside Wisconsin had ever heard of Joe McCarthy. He was not repsonsible for “blacklisting” anyone in Hollywood or getting Communist teachers fired from public schools. Investigations of Communist subversion undertaken by the FBI and the House Committee on Un-American Activities preceded Joe McCarthy’s arrival in the Senate and continued for years after McCarthy was dead and buried in a Wisconsin grave.

I don't think ANY article is 100% accurate. This is why it's best to read both sides, use your own discernment, and the truth usually ends up toward the middle. To claim this one senator was responsible for this total witch hunt is not accurate, and never was the case.

As for WND? Not real keen on Joseph Farrah but the website came up in search engine, and is pretty accurate in this case.

And there is always humor involved. I laugh all the time. :D

...among them my beloved Ring Lardner,
Since this thread has gone off topic, maybe it never was on topic, I'll add to the confusion. The main character in Ring Lardner's "You Know Me Al" serial short stories, is a pro baseball pitcher that reminds me so much of our beloved IRT. What do you think Cheri?

I think I could very easily picture IRT buying lovely new furniture for his bride [no joke combinations like walnut & mahogany, either!] Then, hearing her rave about someone's antique furniture, grab an axe and lit cigar to 'fix' his mistake.
[With the furniture, not the wife, in case you didn't read it]
Yeah - I could totally see that.
;)
