A Tale of Two Houses

House #1

A 20 room mansion (not including 8 bathrooms) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool (and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a year. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2400. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwestern 'snow belt' area. It's in the South.

House #2

Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university. This house incorporates every 'green' feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet (4 bedrooms) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground.

The water (usually 67 degrees F.) heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.

HOUSE #1 is outside of Nashville, Tennessee; it is the abode of the 'environmentalist' Al Gore.

HOUSE #2 is on a ranch near Crawford, Texas;
it is the residence the of the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

An 'inconvenient truth.'

And, yes ... I DID check Snopes prior to forwarding it.

Wait a minute Leo - didn't you read that Al Gore recently spent a considerable amount of money to update the energy effeciency of his mansion? The following report documents the results of his efforts:

In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former vice president’s home energy use surged more than 10 percent, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, "An Inconvenient Truth," a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service.

Isn't it interesting how the posts that are irrefutable truths don't get all the posts based on nothing but hatred of the administration. Then again, when there's nothing you can say other than the hypocrite is crying wolf you just don't say anything. You hit it right on. He does something and it not only doesn't fix the problem it makes it worse. That's the typical M.O. for the liberals. Just look at what they've managed to do with fuel prices in the 2 years since Pelosi took over.

Leo you ignorant right wing nut job. You are so caught up in this conservative notion that actions speak louder than words that you fail to see the bigger picture. Mr. Gore's actions are of little consequence. It is his words, his message that will save you, me and the world.

Al is great. Al is glorious. Praise Al.

Leo,your not dumb,just amazingly mis-informed.
Ok,find the letter "G" followed by the letteres r e e n l a n d. It spells Greenland.
Now, I know they probably have a commie, pinkie ,socialist, liberal (have I forgotten any of your other favorite words ) government.
Now, look up the capitol letter "M" followed by e l t i n g. You can find the defintion in the dictionary. Greenland is Melting,OK?
Once you have that,go on line and read the information, including the facts, and get back to me. You may learn something ,but I doubt it. I won't test you,but you may wish to learn more about this decidely liberal, commie, left wing,Koolaid infused notion we lefties like to call Global Warming. I know,it may mean something different to others, like maybe the "racin all we put in der ol' furd ain't hodern up". Thats a different kind of warming up.
It get confusing sometimes.

Well looky there Abner, Greenland is getting greener daily.

Hey Andy, let's be a bit more smart about this and not follow the gospel according to the demi-God ALGORE.

It seems that about 900ad, Greenland was.... well DUH! Green!

It supported farming, hunting of animals (I know not very green there) and even in some records grapes for wine.

Now one thing that is ignored by the greenies and the militant envorimentalist is one important fact - From europe to Siberia to North America we had a 500 year warming spell followed by a freezing spell - oh pass me some more of that Svalbard wine. The amazing thing is that the warming spell also increased the population because of the abundance of food - remember that means that there was a lot of it. Anywho the increase in the population gave us the mass catastrophic events that killed millions. It wasn't the soccer mom's SUVs that did all that around 900ad but the earth with help from the sun.

So to simplify this, Greenland was named because it was green.

All the geology class I have seem to point to other things than mankind to this warming. It has happened before man was here and will happen after he is gone. Best theory I heard lately was based on the rotation of the Milky Way, our galaxy. I know from using inferred instruments that one side of space is *hotter* than the other side is. The side we are traveling towards is colder than the direction we are coming from. I don't know why but I know it to be true. See it with my own eyes. Now, our galaxy rotates around a center point in space, much like our planet orbits the sun. When we are on the *hot* side of the universe the earth goes into a period without glaciers, warming, called the "inter-glacieral" period. I am sure I misspelled everything. On as we rotate around to the cold side we freeze up. The cycles roughly coincide with that rotation. Within those big cycles many things cause minor heating and cooling. 2-4 degress is the normal range, like now. Heavy sun activity or very light sun activity accounts for this. We are now entering a light sun cycle so if things hold true we should start to see some cooling. Much like last winter. Much more snow than normal in most places over the world. The failure of the Gulf streamwas blamed for the mini-ice age of the 1500's. That happens fairly often too. Is it possible that we are messing up the mini-cycles? Maybe a little, but not that much. Mars and Jupiter are both up about the same temp range. Layoutshooter

Sorry Moot,

I can't agree with you on Gore's actions. You lead by example, not talk. Or is what you said tounge in cheek? Layoutshooter
