CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico — The last remaining police officer in the Mexican border town of Guadalupe has disappeared, and prosecutors in northern Chihuahua state said Tuesday they have started a search for her.

Twenty-eight-year-old officer Ericka Gandara held out despite the desertions and resignations that left her as the only officer in the Juarez Valley town, which was served by eight police a year ago.

But Gandara hasn't been seen since Dec. 23. While some local media have reported Gandara was kidnapped, prosecutors' spokesman Arturo Sandoval said her relatives have not filed a kidnap complaint.

Sandoval said the search was started Monday as a missing-person case.

The same day she disappeared, assailants also set fire to the home of a Guadalupe town councilwoman.

The Sinaloa and Juarez drug cartels have been battling for control of the Juarez Valley, leading many residents to flee across the border to Texas or to other Mexican cities.

Most police officers, outgunned by the drug cartels, have resigned and officials say few people are willing to take their place.

The burden of law enforcement has increasingly fallen on a few women.

In the neighboring town of Praxedis G. Guerrero, a 20-year-old woman was sworn in as police chief in October. The man who previously held that office had been gunned down in July 2009 and the town had been unable to find a replacement for more than a year.

The drug gangs are trying to control the valley's single highway, a lucrative drug trafficking route along the Texas border.

In another northern state, Nuevo Leon, police found the severed head of a federal police officer Tuesday, said Jorge Domene, the state government's security spokesman. The officer's abandoned and bullet-ridden car was found on a highway the previous day. The motive for his killing is unknown.

Nuevo Leon and neighboring Tamaulipas state have been torn by a bloody turf war between the Gulf and Zetas drug gangs.

It amazes me the ignorance of the people of this country that we have a civil war in Mexico and they continue to go there on vacation.

Yep, and when one of those on vacation gets kidnapped you can bet your booty that the family will be SCREAMING for U.S. action. The way I look at it is if you are stupid enough to go down there right now you get what you deserve. It is not any different than sticking your finger into a light socket and then suing the electric company for getting shocked.

That's already happening with that couple who was "vacationing" on a lake which bordered Mexico and the US. They were not bright enough NOT to go down there while a civil war was going on and now there is a problem with the killing of the husband.

If it is ON the border our GOVERNMENT SHOULD secure it!! Oh yeah, I forgot, they don't WANT to secure it. It's Barry's fault. He is responsible for that death. He is the nut in charge now, the buck stops with him.

The jet skiers crossed into Mexican waters, they were just butt stupid, they knew of the violance in that area, it wasn't the first time they had been to that lake. Like you said earlier,

.

But now you say, "they don't want to secure it", "it's Barry's fault", "He's responsible for that death", wow......you are becoming a bit unhinged my friend.

No Layout, it is not Obama's fault, it is our fault. We pick our representatives who are in charge and we failed to keep telling them no to slavery, drugs and killing of citizens on this side of the border.

It is amazing to think that a lot in the civil rights world don't take up the fight over slavery but rather concern with redefined discrimination. Must be they are being paid to keep out of that fight.

Nope, no unhinged, just smartin' off, trying to sound like the stupidity that we heard for 8 years was that idiot Bush was in charge. He could be blamed for a lot of really dumb and bad moves but was blamed for everything. SO, now it's Obama's turn.

I do believe that they REALLY DON'T want to secure our border, OR THEY WOULD HAVE BY NOW!! It is the responsibility of the Federal government to secure our borders. They are NOT living up to their responsibility.

Yep Greg, you are right, it IS our fault. We keep electing total fools for public office, what else do we expect?

I've done over 200 pickups, or deliveries in Mexico, and have never left the airport. Unless absolutely necessary, I never leave the airplane unattended. If I'm in the larger, 2 crew member airplane, 1 person always stays onboard, or within a few feet. I've learned who to "tip" so as to get the heck back to the US as quickly as possible. It used to take 2 to 3 hours to unload, refuel, do the paper work, then leave Guadalajara. With about 100 pesos tipped to the fuel truck drivers and 200 pesos to the man who handles the paperwork, I have turned in 30 minutes. Well worth the $30!
