This summer, people from across the country are rising up to send a message: The 99% need a raise.
You and I are among the millions who have called on Congress to create good jobs, marched with thousands who came to Washington, DC last winter, and joined with shareholders this spring to demand that tax-dodging corporations pay their fair share.
And now we're taking our next step. Together with organizations like the National Employment Law Project, CREDO, and Moms Rising, the 99% are uniting to tell Congress it's time to raise the federal minimum wage.
Join with us for our Rise Up Summer, and together we can put more money in the hands of the 99%:

Putting more money into the pockets of ordinary Americans would give a much-needed boost to our economy. Small businesses would grow and hire, and we'd put the 99% back to work.

  • The minimum wage can't support our families: The current federal minimum wage—at $7.25 an hour—amounts to only $15,080 a year. That's almost $9,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of four.
  • We get $7.25. They get 725%: The federal minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation, but CEO pay has risen 725% over the last 30 years.
  • We’ve got some catching up to do: If the federal minimum wage had kept up with inflation over the past 40 years, it would currently be at $10.55.
People who work for a living should be able to live off of their wages. Real legislation is being discussed right now, and it's up to us to show that there is a wealth of support for raising the minimum wage and increasing the spending power for working Americans.
Sign this petition at 99 Uniting. Together, we'll deliver them to our country's elected officials on July 24th:

This summer, we can work to close the growing gap between the rich and the rest of us. I hope you'll join us.
In solidarity,

Mary Kay Henry

Wow, $15,080 is $9k below the poverty line for a family of 4, maybe if you are only earning $7.25/hr you shouldn't have a family of 4.

If they raised minimum wage, there would be less people on Welfare, and people would have more pride in what they are doing.

No there would be less people employed. Minimum wage is a starting wage for school kids and unskilled. It was never meant to be a living wage.

Not only would there be fewer people employed, but every consumer good would cost more, including bread, milk, and other every day items.

Not to mention parents would have to buy more of it because their kids would be living at home longer.

That isn't remotely close to reality, if minimum wage goes up the income limits for social programs go up as well. The worst part of raising minimum wage is it hurts those that have done more with their lives. If you raise the minimum wage from $7.50/hr to $10.00/hr you just cut the ability of those making up to $12.00/hr to survive and decreased the purchasing power of those making up to $15.00/hr. You being a liberal is fine but you need to look at the reality of what you desire for this country. There is not necessarily one side that is right and one that is wrong but we can see the failure in many of the programs and countries that follow the liberal mindset.

Hey,that's their "right" !

I love when I hear people talking about how they are getting several thousand back for a tax refund when they paid nothing in or the cashier at Walmart talking about how hard she works so she deserves all the welfare programs. They seem to fail to realize that their rights end when mine are violated.

Stop having babies, no more sex, lower the population, reduce taxes, ,less crowding, less pollution ,

fewer trucks at the fuel island, more parking room, less crowded interstates, and fewer interstates, sounds good, oh, fewer government services to itch about. so there.

Have all the babies you want...as long as YOU can support them.....But ill give you less government services..ie handouts...and a smaller government that cuts spending and lives within the Constitution as far as taxing and spending...

I had an exchange with someone addicted to Other People's Money, in this case in the form of Medicaid and food stamps. When I correctly accused her of stealing, she insisted, "I WORKED MY WHOLE LIFE AT MINIMUM WAGE AND NOW I NEED THE HELP!" My reaction: "You did WHAT?!?!"

It was like she was proud of it or something.

The feds have no business in business. There should be no minimum wage at all. It takes a lot of gall for government, a government that is totally incapable of controlling their own costs, to DICTATE to private industry what pay rate a job should be paid at. They had not got a CLUE what a job is worth. IF there is ANY job in this country that SHOULD have a minimum wage it's our elected officials. ZERO! That is far MORE than they are worth!
