Hazmat and Hello

First I will start by saying hello to all. I am training my wife for her CDL B. She will be ready to go in a few weeks. we will be looking forward to going into the expediting business. We will be looking for a fleet owner to work for. One question I have nolt been able to find clarification on though. we will also be aquiring our hazmat endorsement, but is it necessary for us both to have it or would it cover the truck and load if only one of us have the endorsement. Any input would be helpful. Thanks and hello again. These forums are very helpful and informative.

The vehicle operator must have a hazmat endorsement. To follow the letter of the law, the team member not on duty must theoretically cease to exist until their next shift as "pilot in command". They are to be off duty or sleeper berth. To recover their HOS they can not be performing any duty of any sort, including being the ready reference for hazmat operation. Additionally, should the vehicle be pulled over by DOT, they will be looking for the operator for all credentials etc.. Good luck.

Translation, yes you both need a hazmat.

correct. you may get a hazmat load but it will be switched before the hazmat drivers hos for that time period is up. not much use if only one of you is hazmat certified, example, you get a load offer for hazmat philly to kansas city, but your switch is in harrisburg,pa, you get paid philly to harrisburg,pa.,the hazmat team gets paid harrisburg to kansas city. if both of you are hazmat your pd for the whole run philly to kansas city. This has happened to us on a few occasions. get both of you hazmat endorsements.

I think the simple solution is to just study for the test and take it. It is really easy because of the common sense questions and if you can read the book.

I would think that if a company allows a mix of hazmat licensed and non-hazmat licensed people in the same truck, they are asking for trouble.

I know at Panther if only 1 team member is Hazmat qualified and not the other, they will flag that truck as non-hazmat.

not always true, the example I gave in first post , has happened 3 times at panther, although as general rule panther does not want mixed endorsements in a truck that regularly does hazmat, they will do what is necessary for them to cover the load.

Welcome to the forums, we look forward to seeing you often. As a rule of thumb in expediting, and most everything else for that matter, you should always go by the KISS rule. Keep it simple stupid!! Both drivers should always have the exact same qualifications, then there is NEVER a problem. SIMPLE is BEST!!

Another thought: what if the HM load needs picked up when a non-HM credentialed driver is at the wheel, and the one who has HM is on a break?
Much better to have it for both drivers.
PS Welcome to EO! :)

I don't see why any company would allow this, it costs the company money to cross dock a load when it is far simpler to just get the endorsement.

it is an easy test, unless you are wanted by interpol, then the background check is nothing.
