Don't assume that a person is proficient just because he/she/it is on TV. Also, NO one is perfect, mistakes occur.

How did you make it through the military without learning how to shoot?

By paying do you mean hiring a guide? I have hired guides for both hunting and fishing. I have guided hunts and fishing trips my self.

If you mean buying an animal that was raised for the purpose of hunting it, that is something that I have little interest in myself. I don't see much difference between that and going to the grocery store. The good side of those "pay" big game hunts is they keep those people out of the "real" woods. They are also quite good for severely handicapped people. Many have set ups for them.

I have hunted on "pay" pheasant farms. Short of going out to the Dakotas there is no other way to hunt pheasants around here since their habitat is all but gone and modern farming practices leave no room for wildlife.

I LOVE pheasant. I breast them out. Then I a sauce of white wine and butter. I sautee onions then flash fry the pheasant along with green/red bell peppers.

When I was in the military it was not considered a "female" duty to go through any combat training - self defense but not combat.
Now of course females do go through the same training as the men.

"..... since their habitat is all but gone and modern farming practices leave no room for wildlife."
My point exactly

Thanks for the recipe for pheasant -

That is EXACTLY why SO many sportsmen in this country belong to groups like Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, The Nation Wild Turkey Federation, The Ruffed Grouse Society, Waterfowl USA, Delta Waterfowl and the list goes on and on. I did not even get into the fishing groups.

Generally speaking those who hunt, fish AND trap are the only ones in this country doing any sort of habitat work. Most of the the general population don't care. The PRETEND to care, they vote for this guy or that guy, drive a hybrid and change a few light bulbs and say how they are concerned about the environment and do SO much to protect it. Then they are the same ones who try to outlaw hunting as bad. They destroy habitat for "theme parks", "golf courses", more "malls" when there are empty malls everywhere. Then us BAD hunters, fishermen and trappers work hard and spend millions of our own money to clean up their mess.

Most people have NO concept of reality.

I don't know about farms taking over but I do know that development has. The biggest problem I see to all of it is my right to hunt on my own land is restricted by the state which has no business telling me what I can do on my land.

With that said, Sue, man is an animal and we can't invade anything because we are part of nature.

Oh by the way, idiot hunters and geeks don't do well with guns.

Farming methods today do serious and unneeded harm to habitat. Oh, by the way, idiot geeks don't do well with trucks, cars, or ANYTHING dangerous. Hunters are NO different than anyone else. There are good ones and bad ones. Just like politicians, pilots, ships captains, priests, loggers, and there is NO end to the list of people who act like idiots when using dangerous things. There is NO reason to single out anyone. There is enough stupid to go around.

You are allowed in Michigan to hunt on your own land without a license. You own the land, you can do so. If I remember correctly IF you get written permission from the adjoining land owners you can hunt that too. You do not, however, own the game. All game and wildlife belong to everyone in the State. You are only required to follow the same seasons, bag limits etc. If you hunt migratory birds, like ducks and geese, you have to have the federal stamp since you don't own that game either.

I know, you want to just kill what ever and when ever you choose too no matter what damage it may do to the public resource. Correct?

Really? How does that work?

I agree that man is an animal, but man "invades" by destroying in a big way habitats of the animal kingdom.

I'm pretty sure that there are lots of people that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a firearm

and Layout .....
"Most people have NO concept of reality"

Sadly that is a very true statement in more ways than one

I understand the need for seasons on hunting, but on your own land?
How do landowners get meat to the table if they cannot go onto theor own land and "pop" a turkey or whatever?
Wasn't that how it was done in your forefathers time?

All game in Michigan belong to the people of the State. Game crosses property lines and NO individual land owner can lay claim to a deer, a turkey or what ever. If every land owner just took what they wanted when they wanted there would be NOTHING left. There is very good science behind the seasons, bag limits etc. They are designed to insure that the resource will always be there. That the health of the resource will be protected.

There were not millions of people around when my forefathers hunted. There were not property lines either.

It is VERY expensive to do the research that is used to determine seasons etc. Most game animals in Michigan and the United States in general are remaining steady or increasing in numbers. The few that are not is due almost 100% to habitat loss.

If everyone just ran around willy nilly, with NO idea how many animals were being taken, what sex were being taken there would soon be none.

Maybe someday you will get the opportunity to talk with my biologist friend. There is SO much to learn.
