Georgia vs. Russia

Any thoughts on this little war they have going? I'm just concerned with how long until UN jumps in and our troops get stretched ever thinner than they are now. I mean we are already operating on 2 fronts. I have a lot of faith in our fighting men and women and our military but I don't know if they could handle a very large peace keeping mission on top of what is already going on.

Ark,
OVM is really close to the truth, it is an internal federation affair and we can't do a thing about it. I would say knowing the history of the two countries and the need for Russia to regain control of Georgia, this may be an all out "to the end" war with a lot of killing to show the world the new Russia.

I think we should stay out of it as well. I would just hate to see the Russians use this as an excuse to regain alot of the land they used to hold before all those smaller nations became their own place. I think Georgia started this anyway.

I don't know what to say. I have said all along that Russia will return to it's old self. We should have NEVER down-sized our military after the Berlin wall fell. I have NEVER seen a "bear" to into a "bunny rabbit". While I wish we could stay out of everything we must keep one fact in the back of our heads. We sat by in 1948 and let Russia enslave most of Eastern Europe. It cost over 25 million lifes and that is not counting the tens of thousands of U.S. lives lost fight the so called Cold War. Too bad we teach bogus history in school. I was intimate with that war, what you all were told on the news and in schools would have done a great job in a corn field as fertilizer. Watch out for Russia. They are looking at bases in South America as we speak. I think we need a standing ARMY of 1 to 1.5 million, not counting the National Guard, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines or Air Force. We need a new fleet of heavy lift bombers to replace the B52. The National Guard should be deployed on our boarders. The reserves should be a "reserve force" only, not used on day one of a campain. No country has ever negotiated from a weak position and had any sucess. Good luck to us all, we are going to need it. Layoutshooter

Problem is Shooter, Russia isn't the invader in this case...it's protecting a stand alone province per say from an attack..a peoples who possess a Russian passport.....Its exactly like when we came to the aid of Kuwait. Georgia is the invader aggressor that is by trying to reclaim the land...Now theres another breakaway land also in the frey....it could get real ugly...

I agree with you Layout. I also think the Marine Corps should be allowed to grow in strength and numbers. Instead it is bound by a bunch of Congressional BS. Always has and always will be. I think the Marine Corps is currently around 200,000 strong. I think it needs to be more around 500,000. The problem is Congress won't let that happen because the Marine Corps works directly for the President and doesn't answer to the Congress. Yeah you see a Marine on the Joint Cheifs of Staff and you see him speaking before Congress, but the orders still come directly from the President. That's why we need a President that knows how to Command. Someone like Colin Powell or that General that ran the last time. I forget his name.

I said I had mixed feelings. The area WAS independent many many moons ago. I still think we should beef up our military, BIG TIME, it may be too late if we wait the the fertilizer hits the spinning blades. Too bad you can't sit down with some of your countrymen who are about my age and worked out of a site near Sudbury. I used to work with many of them as well as Brits, Japanesse etc. They could educate you on what really happened between '48 and the fall of the wall. That would give you a MUCH better idea on what we are facing now. Mark my word, if we sit back too long millions will die. Layoutshooter

recruiters are having a hard time meeting their numbers so what do you propose to build the standing army? do i hear the word draft in the offing?

The ONLY reason the recruters are having a problem is do to the multiple LIES that the news keeps blasting at us. Just like the lie I heard about Viet Nam, echoed here about the Georgia thing, it is an internal affair or a civil war etc. The Soviet Union was behind the North Koreans, the North Vietnamesse, the Sandanesta's, Castro etc etc etc. If the real story was ever told we would have NO trouble recruting what we need. And, by the way, the only group in congress talking about re-newing the draft, is the Demecrats. Charlie Rangle(sp?) of New York is the biggest one pushing for it. Take a look a what Jerry Curry might have to say about things, a real man with a real set of stones. Wish he was in charge right now. Layoutshooter

I really feel a draft would help the country, it would not hurt it.

IT seems to me that we really have a culture problem, more to do with a lack of civility and forward thinking kids. If you really look around you can see what I am talking about.

I am not opposed to a draft, under certian conditions. 1. It has to be universal, male and female, rich and poor, EVERYONE does two years. 2. It does not have to all be in the military. I do believe that not everyone is either fit for the military or belive in it. They can serve in other capicities. 3. No one can run for ANY political office who did not serve at least thier two years. 4. They all are paid the same as the military. On a lighter note, maybe we can use lawyers as targets in basic training. Let's also make it a crime for a lawyer to be in ANY law making capacity. I think it is a conflict of interest. i haven't been following this georgia vs russia closely. i know that georgia and russia have their disputes over sovereignty and from what i read there is a seperatist group of rebels who have been the trouble causing russia to decide to intervene with a vengence. below is from bbc news aug 7th day by day coverage.

Georgian forces and separatists in South Ossetia agree to observe a ceasefire and hold Russian-mediated talks to end their long-simmering conflict.
Hours later, Georgian forces launch a surprise attack, sending a large force against the breakaway province and reaching the capital Tskhinvali.
South Ossetian rebel leader Eduard Kokoity accuses Georgia of a "perfidious and base step".

The head of Georgian forces in South Ossetia says the operation is intended to "restore constitutional order" to the region, while the government says the troops are "neutralising separatist fighters attacking civilians". Russia's special envoy in South Ossetia, Yury Popov, says Georgia's military operation shows that it cannot be trusted and he calls on Nato to reconsider plans to offer it membership.

so now georgia pulls out of iraq to defend the homeland from invading russians.

There are alot of people like myself that have served recently, like within the past 10 years, that would love to serve again in some capacity that being told we can't for medical reasons. It's not because we can't adapt to military life or didn't know how to follow the rules and regulations set forth just got hurt. There are plenty of jobs in the military that someone like myself could do. Then I would be freeing up another Marine that is more capable than myself to carry the fight to the enemy. Only problem is you can't get the brass or big wigs to realize this. You could have someone like myself recruiting, training, doing various clerical jobs and take the people in those positions and use them in the actual operation. Why should someone with the willingness to serve be told and then there be a manpower strain in the military because you are using abled bodied people to do jobs that require able bodied people and do the jobs that don't require able bodied people. It doesn't take alot to do paperwork. See what I mean?

My Situation I hope to heck that they reactivate me I realy do. I wanted one more time over there. I stay fit strong and in shape. I could run the youngens into the ground and outshoot them as well. But some Politicians seen to it that an old war horse was put on the side lines and now waiting to go back in. Well if the powers to be in the White House and Congress see to it Ill get my wish and if I do I will make sure everyone knows here, Like it realy matters to anyone but I will be happy I aint got to worry about a pay check out here in truck stop and I won't have to cold call dispatchers which I realy Hate doing that any way. I hate asking for runs (Begging)!!!! The fact is not if But when they recall me! I will jump up and down for Joy!!!! I will make sure everyone here knows weather they like it or not. If they kick me off oh well Ill wont be back for at least at a min 15 months. By then they will most likely forgot me and or Ill just come back with a Different Name.

It would be just like like going to a party and it dont matter if you show up or not. get my drift. Expendable

Well that my two cents. I wonder when FedEx is going to give me a run. Only one for the week. Like I said you want to know the Truth I hate Cold Calling.

The military I did it for 23 years. I got not less than 3 squares a day weather it was an MRE or hot plate and at least one hour of sleep gureenteed. and One last thing A pay check with out a doubt. No worries. Just do the Job.
I enjoyed it.

I could do my old job again, don't know if I want to though. They still refuse to recognize the hearing loss that I and most everyone who did my job suffers from. They(the Dems) treated us like dirt after the Fall of the Wall. We were just a liability, a large pension pool that would need paid soon. We also were not all that quiet about exposing thier BS. That really p*ssed them off. OH to have the chance, me and a few of them, I get to pick who, locked in a room, OH man would that be fun. Speaking of the Dems, have you noticed that they seem to be fixated on air? Obama and Clinton think that you can solve everything by staying inflated!!!! Lahyoutshooter

That is because it is a "Left Wing" country is doing the attacked. The entire world is headed that way. Freedom is a bad thing. Just wait until you see what happens when the left makes it's final push here. Comming soon. Layoutshooter
