CHICAGO - An executive at Ford Motor Co. said the U.S. automobile industry is beginning to stabilize, after months of free falling sales which have threatened the viability of some of the sector's biggest players.

Jim Farley, Ford's global marketing chief, said Wednesday that seasonally adjusted retail sales demand has held steady for the past four months. Meanwhile, the country's used car market has come "roaring back" since January.

"That shows me that credit's available," he said, following a Ford presentation at the Chicago Auto Show. "When we're seeing the kind of growth in the used car market that we've seen in the last six weeks, that is a really important milestone for the bottoming out of the industry."

It seems that the light is at the end of the tunnel. My only fear is this so-called stimulis package. It is an economy killer. I keep hoping it will somehow go away. Layoutshooter

I think they have been to a certian extent and will get better at it a time goes on. The biggest things that will stop that from happening is the Federal govenment and the unions. Layoutshooter

The government ie the EPA , and the unions with a dose of reality....really has to step back and let these high paid people do the jobs they are paid very well to do...

They don't believe that anyone can solve the problems we have except government. For some strange reason they think that those in government are smarter than those who work for a living. If they were good at something they would NOT be in government. They would be out building a company that would be building that 300mpg car!! Instend they just pass laws that cannot be met. The technology does not yet exsist. Layoutshooter

All the Credit in the world can be available, BUT if your not working it's going to be hard to get it.

That's good. Maybe if the automotive stuff picks up, then all of the other carriers can go back to running all the NLM junk and leave the good stuff alone for the rest of us. Then maybe the rates on the non automotive freight can come back up where they were a few months ago.

The economy will come back, it always has. This is nothing new and not even close to being as bad as it has been in the past. I am just worried about all this government spended. I think it will cause a round of heavy inflation and really slow down the recovery. Our economy works best if left alone. The other thing that can kill a recovery is panic. The media is not helping with this. I even believe that they helped to deepen it with the constent whinning about how bad things are. We will survive this down turn just as we have every other one in the past. Layoutshooter

That is sort of what is going on Jack, but I don't like electric cars for many reasons. There will be many new products coming out over the next 15-20 years. Hydrogen and fuel cells seem to be showing the most promise. It will be an exciting time as these technologies come to life. Layoutshooter
