FDCC Toll Reimbursement Avoidance?

Anyone else finding that you are being routed around the toll roads even when the toll would have been the shorter route? I had just such a scenario, oh well...I took the toll road so i could ensure a timely delivery. I'm ontime, a lil early, crickets a chirping, now I have to wait until they open in 3 hours, but its great that im here on time.(for who..dont know). I wish they would find out when these places open for these early morning deliveries, could have stopped for grub and showers and saved on tolls, guess I go out of service 2morrow to do those things instead of utilizing dead time while loaded on a shipment. Anyways i get a kick out of them routing me 2 hrs out of my way beacause it saves me 15 miles but when it comes to making up time and miles they would prefer to avoid that.

From what i understand by your post, you arrived earlier than appointment.
If you took routing, you would have saved tolls, and still been there on time.
Also,in the past year,if you have noticed, the routing that you have been getting in most part, has taken you off the toll roads, not just since this new pay plan, and believe me I don't like the new pay, but as far as toll roads, their routing hasen't changed.
When I get a delivery appointment, and I know I'm going be early,1st I ask if customer will take it early, and if not, then I decide if I have time to stop and do the other things your talking about.
Hope this helps in future.

It would seem calling the customer prior to delivery would answer all of those questions.

us at fedexcc arent given the phone numbers, and myself i try to get dispatch to do that
when they cant get an answer,we have to treat as straight up delivery,
customer service team should have done that, but as you know, lot of things dont get done that should

That was funny.
Maybe a item they should consider changing so drivers have a better idea of scheduling.
But as mentioned, there are always going to be those little things.
I forgot about those confirmed/unconfirmed loads from our early Roberts/Fedex days

we just came off a run where the MD, DE, NJ tolls equalled exactly the toll money included in the run offer. Probably a coincidence but I suspect in the long run we'll even out where the toll money paid to us is less than the tolls.

It doesn't seem to make sense to route us around the toll roads to avoid paying the owner for the toll. Their software selects the appropriate route for trucks and, on occasion, for the load. We'll be routed around the PA Tpke, for example, if we are laden with hazmat not allowed in the tunnels; same for most all other tunnels in the USA and for thru city routes that have a bypass. Temporary road hazards may also require a rerouting.

More often than not, it seems, the customer that calls the load in doesn't know the operating hours of the consignee. A third party customer may not know the hours of the shipper or the consignee. It is the reponsibility of the customer service agent to obtain the hours of the customers but they may not be open when the load is booked so FedEx has no choice but to send us straight thru without a confirmed delivery time. I hate it when we have no confirmed date/time but that's the nature of expediting. When we accept a non-confirmed load,we also accept the carriers delivery policies.

I don't knowabout you guys, but when I was on the road and most of the time we were not given the consignees Phone #'s when I got inthe area or the closest truck stop, I checked in the phonebook and got there direct number or uses the Yellowpages on the web, when I got the load to get it, I then called the reciever and found out of it could be delivered early or got a delivery time directly from them.

As far as the tolls and being routed around them, that is stupid, even though it included or not included in the price of the load. I cannot see putting on the extra mileage just to save the tolls. IF hazmat, that is a different story due to tunnels, and etc. but to save $10.00 in tolls to go out of my way NO Way.

The tolls are a tax deductiable expense.

Just make sure you save all of them. But, if you do pay for the tolls make sure the receipts are not on THERMAL PAPER. MOST OF THE STATE TOLL ROADS USE IT. THEY FADE OUT. and if you take the tolls as a deduction and you are audited and cannot be read. that amount will not be allowed.
It is the same with other receipts, for instance
Stores:
Walmart, K-mart,Dollar General, and family dollar stores.

Fuel

Mostly all Fuel stops use thermal paper for all there reciepts:
So if you get a print out reciept no matter what you buy, fuel, food, accessories, CB's and etc. they are all on Thermal paper and will fade out especially in the truck. or if folded and stuffed in envelopes, it does not make any difference. unless you receive a regular Fuel ticket. Even some of them fade out, TA/Petro

Make sure you make copies of all receipts at least either weekly or monthly, and group them by type

EagerBeaver asked, "Anyone else finding that you are being routed around the toll roads even when the toll would have been the shorter route?"

No. We are not finding that.

On a recent run from Los Angeles to Chicago, FedEx paid us more in tolls that we actually paid. While toll avoidance was possible on this run, FedEx routed us on toll roads.

On another run from New Hampshire to San Francisco, FedEx routed us on I-80 through Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. Other routes were available that also would have gotten us to the delivery with plenty of time to spare. Those routes were not given. The toll roads were; as they were the most direct and fastest route.
