Fallen Police Officer

We were shocked while at the Expo to find out our home town had lost it's first police officer in the line of duty. This hits really close to home for us. One of our managers coaches his one son in soccer. As well 2 of our staff live in the apartment complex where this happened.

How very sad for all involved. It is also very sad to see what has happened to our area. The "DownRiver" towns were a good place to grow up when we were young. It baffles the mind to see what they are becoming.

I agree. I grew up Downriver as well and to see such a senseless loss of life is just terrible. It is sad what little value some people place on human life.

This is sad, anyone that kills a Police officer in the line of duty should be put to death. One of my friends was a Akron Police officer and was responding to a call when his Police car was T-boned by a drunk driver. The guy only got 10 years.

Sadly I am not sure it would deter the people who do these things. But at least it might bring justice for the family.

John,

We live in a small metro suburb and I can't imagine how it would be for our community if that happened here. Positive thoughts and prayers to his family.

I think that Michigan does have the death penalty for cop killers. That may be the only crime that Michigan has it for. Not sure. If convicted I hope they fry the bum.

Don't think Michigan has one at all. Even for cop killers.

You would think so, but sadly he will appeal 10 times and we will pay for him to get a college degree in prison while the officers widow struggles to support 2 children. Sorry this whole thing just sickens all of us at Load One.

As a retired Police Officer I attended another funeral for an Officer killed in the line of duty, Chicago has lost 3 Officers in the last 4 monthes. And the gang bangers are armed to the teeth. It appears to be open season on Policed Officers in Chicago.

Not only police officers but our society as well.

There is no death penalty in the state of Michigan.

If there was one, then it has to apply to every murder in the state with no exceptions. Once we go down this path of applying it because of who was killed, then justice is no longer blind.

It is a sad day but one that seems to show that the area is getting out of control. My city seems to be having a lot of issues with crime in the last year, and in the midst of all of this, cities and counties are not cutting Union workers but police and fire fighters. People who like to see the park lawn cut don't get the idea that their homes may now be targets.

According to some reporter on NPR, there have been 87 LEOs who were killed. No mention of a breakdown of city or state or federal, just 87. If we continue to mess around with things like an open border, we will see that increase.

Such a tragedy...My heart and prayers go out to his family. Another senseless murder of a noble man who was doing his job to serve and protect.

I think we might have a poker tournament to raise money for the family. We are just looking for some good ideas for a great fundraiser. Anyone have any or seen or been to any really creative ones?

I am going on the annual Fallen Heroes Poker Run next weekend...3 weeks prior there is one for Detective Dressel who was killed in the line of duty...The proceeds from that go directly into the children's college funds..It's $30/person $ 40/couple...That ride aolne had over 400 Attendees..Fallen Heroes will be much larger... Another good idea is a casino bus trip. My daughters had those as fundraisers for HS sports.

I think there was a tent setup on the east side of Telegraph just north of I-94 accepting donations for the family. I thought it was still there yesterday but if you are passing through, stop by and give.

Just an FYI, you can give to the family by stopping at any PNC bank (aka National City) in Michigan for the Cpl. Matthew Edwards Memorial Fund or send something to;

Thin Blue Line of Michigan
P.O. Box 415,
Howell, MI 48844

Yes both items are correct. They have 2 funds set up. We are just trying to come up with some creative fundraisers so we can make a large donation to the family fund.

Hey John, not knocking your plans one iota, it is a great thing to do. We are a mobile workforce and a lot of people can't make it to one of these events - like the expo - so more access that we pass on the better just as the more people being involved, the better.

Just a suggestion, and it may not matter in this case, the poker thing brings in a lot of money, people enjoy them a lot but the state can be anal about it. You may have to bring in a vendor to run it and provide supplies, check them out carefully if you go that route.

We run "poker nights" often at our Ducks Unlimited Chapter and never use outside vendors. They make good money.
