Just a heads up. The TA in BloomsBury, NJ, now requires you CDL# to purchase fuel. Getting a bit intrusive I would say. They claim is it because of fuel theft. If so, just ANOTHER instance of presumed guilt. SWEET!! ZIEG HEIL!!!

No, they can hold my fuel card and driver loyalty card till I come in for my receipt but they don't get the CDL number.

They held the fuel card as well. I was taken by surprise this time, there will be NO next time. I will NO LONGER fuel here and will inform the manager of that as well as TA corporate. They have NO right to ask for that. NO valid reason.

Absolutely Joe....a CDL gives them access to far more "personal" info that they need.....all the info relevent is attched to the fuel card and loyalty card.....anything other then that is intrusive.

I TRIED to talk to the manager but they would NOT allow me to talk to him. I did complain. They said it was TA corporate policy to enter your CDL# into their computers when the card readers were down. I told them that I would no longer do business at this truck stop and would contact coporate as well. I explained that they have NO LEGAL authority to be that intrusive. They said that it was to prevent drive off's without paying. I then asked why they ASSUMED that I would do that? I explained that in the U.S. we are PRESUMED innocent and their policy is in violation of that RIGHT. She went blank, she did NOT understand. Must have been an Obama Bum.

My complaint to TA corporate offices is below. I will post their answer IF they get back to me on this.

The card readers were down when I was trying to purchase fuel. When I went into the fuel desk I was required to give them my CDL# which they entered into the computer. There is NOT any legitmate right for them to ask for my CDL to purchase fuel. I will NO longer purchase fuel at this TA or ANY TA that requires that information. I will drive off. I have posted this information on the internet so other drivers can be aware of this and do the same. It is offense to me that you would assume that I would drive off without paying, the reason given for asking for the CDL, as well as a violation on my RIGHT under the Constitution to the presumption of innocence.

whether they have a right or not they got what they wanted. in case you haven't noticed there is no bill of rights when dealing with private business. you are guilty and will do it their way or no way at all. sorry joe but i worked in too many places where i was presumed guilty. guess i am a bad man. you had dinner with me, you know!!

"I will NO longer purchase fuel at this TA or ANY TA that requires that information. I will drive off."

That could have been worded a little better, I think, especially since that is the very thing they are trying to prevent.

It could be read that way, and I bet they will, too - easier than actually responding to a legitimate complaint.

I stopped in there this morning, knowing what to expect. Went in and handed the girl at the fuel desk my Comdata card and Road King card. She asked me if I had my CDL.

Me: "Uhm, yeah, I do."

She: "Can I see it?"

I looked at her like that was an odd request, but said, "Sure," and I took it out of my wallet and held it up so she could see it, and then started to put it back in my wallet.

She said, "I need it."

I said, "What for?"

She said, "I need to key the number in to start the pump."

I said, "What number? My CDL number? What's wrong with the Comdata card?"

She said, "I don't know if there is anything on the card, I don't know if the card is open for fuel, so I need to key in your license number in case you drive away."

I said, "No you don't. The Road King card tells you who I am and where I live, the Comdata card tells you who I drive for, and it matches the name on the side of the truck and the DOT numbers right under it. But here's $100 cash, give me back the Comdata card and we'll just go with that."

She said, "I still need your CDL number."

I said, "It's retarded enough that I have to come in here twice to pay for something once, but the Comdata card and the Road King card already gave you far more information than you need for a cash equivalent transaction, so there is no way I'm going to give you my CDL just for the privilege of being able to enter into a actual CASH transaction for fuel. Give me back my Road King card, I'm going down the street to Pilot."

Which I did.

I only put in 12 gallons into a 25.6 gallon tank. I didn't even need fuel, really (was on my way to Ithaca), but I stopped in just to give them another example of Layout's justified outrage. :D

I sorta did the same thing to the new Flying J "Associate" about half an hour south of Waco. At most J's you can swipe your Frequent Fuel card at the car or RV diesel pumps to start the pump and then you can go in and pay cash, since the Frequent Fueler card is registered with my name and address. At this one, the don't have car and RV islands, and the Frequent Fueler card won't start the pumps on the big truck islands. I went inside, with a handful of cash obviously visible, and asked why. She said the owner doesn't want to do it that way, that I have to give them a cash deposit first. I told her to please inform the owner that he has now lost all my future business and that the Waco location would be happy to have my business.

Nothing gets on my nerves more than having to go inside a store twice to buy something once.

LOS: it wouldn't help in this case, but when you write a letter of complaint in the future [dunno why, but I think you will, and good for you! :)] it is more effective if you include what it is that you want from them. When you don't request a remedy, it's just a complaint, and those too often get pitched into the 'round file'. Requesting a specific resolution pretty much demands a response, and you'll most often get one, in my experience. Not always what you asked for, but a response, at least.
FYI: when using Comdata, I will refuse to hand over my CDL too.

Your ARE correct, I write MANY and will continue to do so. Only by voicing our concerns do we have any chance to fix them. I ALSO often write letters of thanks or praise, when it is earned. I WILL include what you suggest, I like that thought. They have called me but I was driving in heavy traffic. They claimed that they would call back in 10 minutes after I had parked but they never did. More as I hear it.

They certainly have the right to attempt to prevent driveoffs, but we have the right to attempt to protect our personal info from identity theft, too. As Turtle pointed out, the loyalty card has all the info they require - if that's not good enough, I'll go elsewhere.

That is correct. The assumption of guilt never works. Nor does the collection of data that they have no real need for.

I know most people understand this but I think maybe it should be said. For those facing frustrating policies please keep in mind the person at the counter does not make the rules. They are simply doing what they are told to do to keep their job.

Writing a letter as layout did or asking to speak with a manager when time allows might be the best avenue for results and make some underpaid employees day a little easier to get through.

Response to my email to TA. Corporate did NOT answer me. The manager that I was NOT allowed to speak to when I asked to that day DID answer me.

"It is the corporate policy of TA to request the drivers CDL number and stae of issue for any fuel purchese not don at the pump this is done for our records only and is information that is already done when you scan at the pump. I am sorry that you feel that we should not ask but it is our policy and if we do not ask our fuel des personal are in violation of that policy.
Thank you for your concerns and we will bring them up to our field manager"

When the pump asks for license and state, I use the truck's plate #, and it's always approved, lol.

I've had the card reader ask several times for the license and state. I don't recall which locations, but I seem to recall that it's always at the same ones when it happens.

Bloomburg, NJ and Binghamton, NY, same thing.
