Washington Times - Smokers face big tax hike Wednesday

However they satisfy their nicotine cravings, tobacco users are facing a big hit as the single largest federal tobacco tax increase ever takes effect Wednesday.

Tobacco companies and public health advocates, longtime foes in the nicotine battles, are trying to turn the situation to their advantage. The major cigarette makers raised prices a couple of weeks ago, partly to offset any drop in profits once the per-pack tax climbs from 39 cents to $1.01.

So whats next? Fast food, soda, coffee, maybe beef, how about deep fried fish on friday........or whatever else the Government decides is bad for you........

And where are the states going to get the dollars they won't collect in sales tax when people finally quit smoking and they have figured "x" into their budgets???

Oh and i don't smoke, but for me this isn't about smoking, its about government control and nothing else

I think tobacco and alcohol be taxed out the kazoo...They are both proved damaging.....ok now turn around and say that opens the window for increased illegal trafficking in these commodities....Fine...prosecute prosecute...throw them in jail...just hammer the traffickers...idealistic? Most likely...

I also believe government sponsored gambling should be stopped...

Yep, I agree on the control issue. Here some more about it.

Obama Signs Children’s Healthcare Bill (Reuters, Feb. 4, 2009)

President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed a law expanding a health program to include 3.5 million uninsured children, advancing an overhaul of the U.S. healthcare system despite the embarrassing withdrawal of his nominee to lead the initiative….The expansion is being paid for by raising the federal tax on cigarettes to $1 per pack from the current 39 cent-per-pack tax. Taxes on cigars and other tobacco products will also rise.

30 Cents Per Pack Hike May Be Compromise On Cig Tax (WHAS11 News (ABC) Political Blog, Feb. 3, 2009)

A variety of sources say democratic leaders in Frankfort have settled on a 30 cents-per-pack increase in the cigarette tax combined with more budget cuts as the best way to solve Kentucky's budget problem. The question now is whether Senate republicans will go along with the plan.

Armey, GOP Leaders Criticize Beebe's Tobacco Tax Plan (Associated Press, Feb. 3, 2009)

Republican leaders stepped up their criticism Tuesday of Gov. Mike Beebe's proposed hike in cigarette and chewing tobacco taxes, with the GOP's House leader calling Beebe a "tax and spend" governor.

Budget Proposal Likely To Have New Taxes (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Feb. 2, 2009)

Tobacco users, natural gas drillers and people without health insurance should be all ears Wednesday when Gov. Ed Rendell unveils his $28 billion or so budget for fiscal 2009-10.Faced with red ink that could reach $2.3 billion by June 30, Mr. Rendell is searching for more revenue. He's likely to propose higher cigarette taxes -- perhaps an additional 10 cents per pack, putting the total at $1.45 per pack in Pennsylvania. That's considerably higher than the national average of $1.10 per pack.

Bill limiting tobacco sales introduced on Beacon Hill (The Republican, Feb. 2, 2009)

The Massachusetts Medical Society is pushing for restrictions on the sale of cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco and other tobacco products in places where health-care professionals work. State Sen. Susan C. Fargo, D-Lincoln, chair of the Joint Committee on Public Health, filed legislation on behalf of the society that, if passed, would appear to have its greatest impact at pharmacies where customers can get prescriptions filled and purchase tobacco products.

Cigarette Tax Increase Snuffed Out in House Subcommittee (Roanoke Times & World News, Jan.29 2009)

A House of Delegates subcommittee on Wednesday rejected a cigarette tax increase proposed by Gov. Tim Kaine, delivering a blow to a major piece of the administration's plan to balance the state budget and minimize cuts to the Medicaid program.

Arkansas Gov Rallies Support for Tobacco Tax Hike (The Associated Press, Jan. 26, 2009)

I believe the alcohol should be taxed big time too. But, unfortunately, we will not ever see that happen.

Alcohol should be taxed at least as high as tobacco. It's addictive, it alters a person's brain and personality, it's potentially fatal if consumed in large quantities, and...
Consuming even moderate amounts of alcohol could increase a woman's chance of developing breast cancer or other cancers by 13%, according to a British study scheduled to be published March 4 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, the Los Angeles Times reports.

I'm all for it - it's only fair that this regressive tax should be imposed on the poor and low-income people who pay no income taxes. This way, the money that Obama "spreads around" to them will end up back in the govt. coffers.;)

The only problem is that when the nation's youth, the poor, and other smokers quit smoking or start getting their cigs on the black market the revenue shortfalls will have to be made up somewhere else - most likely from businesses and those evil rich people who always seem to keep too much of their own money.

Alcohol and tobacco are taxed enough already. Want more revenue and less crime? Legalize marijuana. Let the govt. manufacture it, package it in packs like Camels or in cans like Prince Albert pipe tobacco. They can control the quality and sell it in ABC stores since it's no worse than booze or cigarettes.

Let me guess: My gun, right?

"Gun control" makes no difference to me one way or the other. We do not own any guns, though I am going to inherit an unwanted one when my father dies. If laws and regulations get to the point where I will have to jump through hoops and pay extra taxes just to legally have that gun in my possession then I will stop in at the nearest police department and tell them they can have it.

And I agree with Pilgrim, legalize marijuana. Then the money that is being spent trying to get it off the streets can be spent on something else. I have no use for the stuff, but apparently a lot of people do and someone besides criminals might as well be making money off of it.

OH NO!! Don't give it to the police, give it to me!!! I want it!! I don't have one of what ever it is. NO, not a tax on another tax on guns, not yet a any rate. He has proposed have tax on ammunition. Rumors on the amount of that tax run anywhere for $.05 per round to has high as $1 per rounds. That would be on top of the self imposed tax that is levied on all hunting equipment. It is call the Pittman/Robinson tax. I forget the year but it was levied at the REQUEST of sportsmen's groups to pay for habitat conservation. Up until now at least that fund has not been raided by congress for stupid stuff, although they have tried in the past. AS to higher taxes on tobacco and booze. You will see an increase in black market activity in those commodities. There is already a rather large black market in tobacco. A lot of illegal cigs are bought on reservations and shipped to Michigan which already has a very high cig tax. Along with that rise in black market activity you will see an increase in crime to go along with it. Outlawiing booze did not work and booze taxes led to "moonshiners" out running the "revenuers". That in part did lead to NASCAR so I guess some of you like that. Outlawing drugs has not worked and just led to crime. What in high heavens does Barry think this will do? What putz. Sin taxes do not stop sin, the only thing that ever totally stops a person from sinning is death. Layoutshooter

That would not be a wise thing to do. "Walk into the nearest police station", with a GUN!! Hope you walk out.....

You guys ain't seen nothin yet when it comes to taxes. This is ONLY the beginning. Now tobacco, no problem, I don't smoke and it is bad for you anyway. Next, booze, no problem, I seldom drink and it is bad for you anyway. Next guns or ammunition, no problem I don't use them and they have no real use and are mainly evil. Next and next and next. It will NEVER stop and sooner or later YOU and what YOU like will be taxed to death as well.

As I stated before, and this IS fact not my ranting, when we arrived in England in 1976 gas was $4 per gallon on the open economy. I was paying under a dollar when I left home. The income tax in England, Scotland and Wales STARTED at 50% and went up to 98%. Margret Thatcher did lower it some while we were there but not all that much. Then there was the property taxes, auto tags, tire taxes, all much higher than similar U.S. taxes.

The next BIGGIE to watch our for is the Value Added Tax, Hillary REALLY likes this one. She brought it up many times while she was trying to start a National Un-Healthy system when Slick Willy was king. Look up the info on that tax, it is a doozey. It was a 17% tax when we lived there. In brief, this is how it works.

coal in the ground, untouched is given a "value" say $1 dollar per pound.

mine it - value has been added +17% to the original price.
crush and grade it +17% of the last price
package and ship +17% of the last price
sell to a wholesaler +17% of the last price
sell to a retailer +17% of the last price
sell to a customer +17% of the last price

It is a economy killing tax. Our pound of coal now costs us, the consummer, $3. Nice eh? When we lived in England we just assumed, when planning a purchase, that when buying a product that was available on the local economy and in the States that the British price would be double that of the U.S. price. I always came close to that.

All this is to gain free third world health care.

ALL you Obama bums that voted for this goober asked for this so I don't EVER want to hear you complain about ANY of the taxes. I sure don't thank you for the favor, you can bet on that. Even the "Beatles" got sick and tired of the high taxes, I wouldbe too if I was in the 98% bracket, remember the song "Tax Man"? Any idea what that was about? I KNOW I KNOW , waving my hand wildly, TAXES!!! WAY TOO HIGH TAXES!!

We can still avoid this if we try. Stop the push for government control of 30% of the economy, national health, socialised medicine or we will have to face those kinds of taxes. The tobacco tax is just the first of many. Layoutshooter

Don't forget, using the coal example, if you heat with coal, as many do in England, you don't buy it by the pound, you buy it by the ton. SOOO at $3 per pound, times 2000 lbs your ton of coal is $6000 dollars. Hope you like it. I don't. IT SUCKS!! Thanks again!! Hey, I got a great idea, all you Obama Bums can pay my taxes for me!! I like that one. An Obama Bum tax to cover those of us who knew better!! Cool! Layoutshooter

As I read these responses that layout put together from what you all had to say in this thread, I found it amazing that it seems to simply be just about the individual that was writing, no big deal that the action was having an affect on anyone else, as long as it didn't affect each of you, it was ok, infact, some were even happy if the gov increase a tax on a product if they want to simply because it is not healthy or good for you... so much for freedom of choice in using a legal product without government interference.

As I read these post it reminded me on another situation that people were ok with , until it happened to them:

Pastor Martin Niemller

By: Pastor Martin Niemöller

In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant.

Then they came for me —
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

Funny how that worked out huh.........
