I'm just curious to see if any one has switched from a dodge sprinter to a gm or ford unicell van with one single wheel at the back NOT a CUBE van with dulies.I'm thinking of switching due the the high maintence of the sprinters and part shortages

I have not but that is a good question. A few years back a member using the login dieseldoctor had the Aerocell SRW model. He did a truly amazing buildout of the van. Look up his old posts and you'll find lots of good info.

That's what I am in the process of right now . . . 2006 Sprinter 3500 to 2012 XLT10 Ford 4 wheeler. I'm switching for a lot more reasons than those!

They have one of those Hi-Top HCV E-350's over at wehelpbadcredit.com.
It can be Ford Certified and that extends the warranty from the 32k (where it is now) to 100k along with other benefits, including preferential rates.

I really think a Sprinter is an awesome van.I mean, look at it.The height, length, size, fuel mileage, comfort, ride, and quietness, along with a awesome hvac system.Nice looks, also. But, where the fuel mileage is a huge plus, the price and maintenance is not.I have heard so many stories about them, and know a few that have them.I think it is a even trade, the less gas mileage of a american van vs the high cost and downtime of a Sprinter, in some cases.Wondering what the Ford version will be like, along with the price. The Cargo Maxx seems like a real good alternative to a Sprinter as well.I love my 12' spartan body Ford, even though it will not win any prizes for style. Parts are available anywhere, dirt cheap. And anyone can work on these. But, I can still do 3 skids, and the nice part is that it is square on the insides.49"between wheel wells, and 14" on each side of that.Makes real easy to utilize "youre space" (The 14" on each side, ) and still maintain the 49x 63x12" that I give my carrier for freight.I guess in the end it is all about what works for the owner and the company they are leased to.

The Only thing I like about the sprinter is the 14 feet for cargo it's tall enough to stand in and the mpg is awesome now the bad part is the maintence on them is freeking crazy expencive 3 times the amount for a noth american van and they never have parts the down time for 2-3 weeks and you have to go to a chrysler dealer that can work on them or go to a mercedes dealer and it costs big bucks for labor

Hey Guido,

Are you actually getting 146" inside usable length as it says in the spartan brochure, or are you at exactly 144 as you mentioned?

I spent some time at the Buffalo, NY Unicel plant Tuesday. They made some repairs to the rear and side doors on my CargoMax. They are top shelf. The Toronto plant builds the CargoMax and they didn't do a good job with the doors at all. The guys in Buffalo did a great job of fixing them. Ive not been impressed with my dealings with Toronto, but I was very impressed with the peopld in Buffalo.

With that said, while waiting on the repairs, I ventured out in the yard. They had a few of the aerocel cw (citywide) units sitting around out there. Those are a nice option as well and they are built at the Buffalo plant. I saw some of the same doors that have been problematic on my CargoMax that had been built and installed by the Buffalo plant. They closed perfectly on the units I looked at.The only problem I saw with them is the length. I would definitely want at least a few more inches added to the inside length. The brochure shows something like 143". Personally, I believe if I were buying new I would want a minimum of 13'. That gives you some room to fold a bed behind the seats and still have just a little more than 12' for freight.

Its worth a stop if your in the Buffalo area.

Yeah, that's what turned me off about the unicell model. Got to have at least 144" usable length for three 4 foot skids. 146" would be better in case of overhang or whatever.

What about it Guido..........you getting 146" or 144" usable inside length in that supreme spartan body?

Is carrying 3, 4ft skids the norm now? How many days a month are u all running 3 skids per run.

I dont actually see that many, but some of my better paying loads are 3 skids and my carrier wouldnt have taken anything less than a 3 skid van.

Well..bed on the sidewall..problem solved....and since true 48x48's are getting rare these days...can't remember the last time I ever had that size....lots of 45x48's tho....most of the wooden skids I've carried lately are of the 40x48 variety...which 40"s x 3= 120' or 10 feet..

This is true....but if Im buying new and there are full 12'+ options, the 143" floor wont get my cash. Buying used, you may have a point.

Re: Any one switch from a sprinter van to a gm or ford 3500 unecell single rear wheel

Its not what you carry normally that gets you the "extra" loads and money..its having the ability to carry that one off load that you don't get everyday..I just had 2 76x50x48 racks ...having 14 ft of load floor and 13 ft of e track(i keep that last ft for moving things around when i get big loads) gets me loads that i normally wouldn't see....are they a bunch? nope, but there are enough of them that it makes having the extra room and weight carrying capacity worth the extra expense up ft....
