If the exhaust brake comes on when it ramps up, it's entering 'white smoke prevention mode'. This can be turned off in the ecu customization menus. The ecu has a provision to recognise when a pto is activated. You can have it ramp immediately to a specific rpm and provide all the power it's...

What I hate most about winter is bringing snow-covered trucks into the shop and watching them piss 20 gallons of water onto the floor as it melts. Shop floor was a foul olympic pool this morning. The new guy needs to learn to jack the front high into the air and set on jackstands so the water...

Stop When the Gas Nozzle Shuts Off

Generally, only chronic overfillers who are ocd about filling to full dollar amounts run into evap problems. When I have an audience, I'll put an even dollar amount in, then give it an extra 37 cents worth just to watch 'em squirm.

I love rockauto. Common parts like belts filters and brake pads are readily available for class 5-6 trucks.

The newest trucks come with a Bendix AD-IP dryer, which has a stand-alone Bendix governor bolted to the side. These are easy. The filter spins onto the top. After draining the air tanks and purge reservoir on the dryer, you can easily replace the purge valve assembly with a pair of snap ring...

Unfreezing that truck involved removing the filter, pouring brake line antifreeze (methanol) into the air dryer's ports, and some in the filter. Fixed it right up.

Cold weather challenges: I talked someone through unfreezing their air dryer yesterday. The dessicant filter may have been original and was not getting water out of the system. Id strongly consider replacing the dryer filter/ dessicant cartrige annually, preferably just before cold weather...

    Big Truck Truck info

Trucks that are 2007 MY and older have no DPF to worry about. 2010 and older generally have a DPF but no SCR. Do you want to keep it under the GWVR that demands a CDL? Freightliner M2 is popular, but I'm no fan of the CAT C7 engine. Cummins/PACCAR is preferred. Hino 268 is under CDL GWVR, 338...

The best piece of advice I can give is to abandon this idea completely and instead buy a truck that meets your needs. With that out of the way... Not familiar with that Cummins, but Isuzu shouldnt have many packaging problems. Consider using trans too, this will keep you from running into...

The #1 thing that comes to mind is the ITV is sticking shut. Intake throttle valve. Left side of truck, it's what the intercooler outlet tube is connected to. Pull off the intercooler outlet hose. Reach in and grab the throttle plate. Is the throttle loose on the shaft, or are the shaft...

There was a piece the size of a big wedding ring left in the top, and part of the tip was left at the bottom, and a whole lot of absolutely nothing left in the middle. Dissolved in the urea. Urea is some corrosive stuff, but I didn't expect that at all.

Well, let me tell ya, there's never a time where something is not broken on a truck. Every truck is broken. Even brand new ones. Something is awry. The wise person regularly combs over their truck and looks for this thing. Check the fluids frequently, along with the tire air pressure. A...
