    Glider Kit?

I have never considered doing it because I have never owned a truck. But my first job in the trucking industry was with a 20 truck family owned company. It was an all Mack operation and they occasionally went with glider kits to replace a rotted out cab. At least back then, late 70's early...

South Dakota ranks eighth in deer accidents

I gotta believe that Wisconsin ranks in the top five. Michigan must be up there also. I dodged a few the other night on I-94. The only deer hunting I do is with vehicles. I bagged one in Wisconsin with the rear of a 28' pup and one in Iowa with a 98 Chevrolet van. I wonder why West Virgina...

    Put Out Of Service

    >I have been placed out of service more than once, for good >enough reasons. Whitey what were the circumstances that put you out of service? Was it refusing loads? Who are you leased to?

    Put Out Of Service

X-Man, hope all is well with Uncle Bob. Did you spend a great amount of time under the Las Vegas sun? The reasons I ask are various and sun dried. That hot Vegas sun can do to your brain what it does to a grape. Rich, I think you may be on to something. 12 hours prior to my discovering that...

    Put Out Of Service

Has anybody ever been put O.O.S. by their carrier, only to find out after the fact? I am not talking about being put O.O.S. for log violations, failure to submit vehicle inspection reports or any other discrepancies. Just arbitrarily put O.O.S. and not notified.

Do these B.O.L.'s originally have another expedite carriers name or an LTL carriers name? Sales reps for LTL carriers hand out b.o.l.'s with their companies name on it by the ream.

    Cargo Van Rates

    >Frankly when I hear about individuals holding out for a $1.00 per mile I have to wonder, why are they in this business. From 1987 through the early 2000's freight paid more and expenses to run that freight were 200% less. Rich, I am confused by this statement. My van has a gross weight of...

    Sprinter Pay Rates

I should also note that Panther pays vans $1.00/mile for loads over 2200#. A few weeks ago I hauled one pallet of bearings, 2350# from Elgin, IL to Smyrna, TN. That one paid $1.00/mile. The load offer stated a Sprinter van was required. I questioned dispatch about this, thinking it was a...

    Sprinter Pay Rates

On a few occasions I hauled 3 standard 4-way pallets in my old Chev long wheel base. With bulkhead I had 132" of cargo space. First pallet went straight in, the next 2 were turned. 48,40,40 = 128". My former carrier required vans to be able to legally haul 3,000# I took a couple of...

    Companies that hire drivers?

There may be some small Mom & Pop companies that have their own authority, customers and trucks that hire employees. Con-Way Now started up with company equipment and company drivers along with owner/operators.

Greg, I never saw Brazil but I am a Terry Gillium fan. When the movie came out I made a mental note to go see it. It played for about a week and then disappeared. Over the years I forgot about it. I should rent or buy it. Highway Star, Moot Kerouac??? I think Moot Mundane is more accurate...

HOS, Driver Shortage Top Trucking’s Concerns

David, I assume your list of top 10 issues is recent. Looks like the same top 10 issues from 1975. Except the 55 m.p.h. speed limit was on the list in 1975. As long as I have been in trucking there has been a driver shortage. I guess the rules of supply and demand don't apply when it comes...

    Good carrier relationship??

A carrier that books multiple loads on one truck should not be marketing and charging exclusive use rates.

    Sex on the road.

I got busted by a corporate auditor for having a phone book behind the driver's seat in the cab of my truck. I used the phone book for looking up companies with incomplete or incorrect addresses on the B.O.L. The auditor explained that the phone book could become a deadly projectile and kill...
