    New Advance Policy at Panther?

By that logic, Leo, drivers should be paid 100% of the load pay upon delivery, no? And the McDonald's comparison is invalid: those workers don't require money to complete their shift. Panther wouldn't be risking anything by paying upon proof of pickup, they have money in escrow to cover any...

    New Advance Policy at Panther?

Like Leo says "You can't fix stupid" - drivers who are stupid with the advance money won't last long, but is that a reason to deny the drivers who may be in a temporary bind? That's a value judgement, not a business decision. I would think that a smart carrier wouldn't mind giving drivers...

    straight trucks & truck stops

And you KNOW the tollbooth collectors consider us to be real trucks! The only comment I've heard from a t/t driver, was one who asked whether I'd just gone through a truck wash with really hot water. When I looked puzzled, he explained "They shrunk your trailer!":p

Aaah - but can they do it on roller skates? :D:D:D

    New Advance Policy at Panther?

I don't drive for Panther, so their policies don't affect me, but I'm troubled by the attitude that drivers who need the money at pickup probably shouldn't be in this business, and won't last long, either. Whether that judgement is correct or not, it shouldn't be the basis for a decision on...

    deer in the headlights

I wonder if the same reliance upon electronic assistance isn't going to be trouble for those who don't learn to read a map, because they have a GPS unit.....

    Which GPS Should I Buy?

Dude: driving can be stressful enough, what with the other drivers driving you crazy - I'd throw that sucker out the window! I like my Garmin Nuvi, it doesn't bug me at all. (I keep the volume turned off :D) Truck routing would be a huge improvement, though.

    Nutrisystem...

Lisa, can't you snack on calorie free stuff? Raw veggies, rice cakes, (not calorie free, but nearly), stuff like that? I know it's hard to stick with a diet, if you feel deprived:(

    straight trucks & truck stops

Like Arkjar, I've driven t/t, and don't mind choosing a spot that's easier to back a straight truck into, or one (like with a pole in it) that a t/t can't get into. I also park overnite at WalMart sometimes, or all night grocery stores..Or the consignee, if there's no decent place nearby...

    WiFi Qnxshuns

Both Flying J & TA offer their own wifi, for anywhere from 24 hrs of access to a yearly plan. I don't know about Petro or Pilot - think it's hit & miss with them.

    HOS & unwork related drivin

The key words in what Maybedriving cited seem to me to be "driving a motor carrier's vehicle" which would apply to company drivers, no? You're right about the ambiguity - and just yesterday, I read an article about the emissions proposals, in which it was stated that requiring businesses to...

    HOS & unwork related drivin

Actually, there are two exceptions: adverse weather, and emergencies. The adverse weather rule: "Adverse driving conditions means snow, sleet, fog, other adverse weather conditions, a highway covered with snow or ice, or unusual road or traffic conditions, none of which were apparent on the...

How to cope the slow season?

All the above suggestions are good, but before you get engrossed in the spare time activities, are you 100% ready to roll, when the load is offered? Down time is a good time to inspect & clean your vehicle, belongings, etc. Prepare a couple sandwiches, if you eat in - once a load is offered...

    Prepare For Your Trip

Only one thing I'd add: something to occupy your mind during what could be a long wait for help. Books or magazines are ideal, because they won't drain the batteries. If you're not a 'reader', Sudoko (sp?) or 'Find a word' books can be useful, too.

    Thanks TA

Pelicn, as you were typing the post above, I was at Danny's, getting the truck washed, and doing laundry, AT THE SAME TIME! That might be ho-hum for teams, but for a solo, it's like, awesome! :D PS Guess I really am a trucker - Aspen left me cold, but I thought Danny's is cool, lol.
