A fuel hike when Ike strikes?

The Pilot in Knoxville raised it's price from $3.66 to $5.09 between Friday & Saturday - I hope they make an example of them. Except I don't ever remember reading anything about gouging being punished, just apparently empty promises to do so. Either way, all Pilot is getting from me from now on...

    Why such Doom and Gloom

Why such doom & gloom, you ask? Because we are apparently either more likely to remember negative experiences, or those who have a negative outlook are more likely to want to share. To illustrate: the thread in the General Forum on "Nastiest truckstops" got 40 responses. A counter view, "The...

Can't help but wonder where you got the numbers you're using - 1.15/mile for a cargo van? If you can get that rate, and "at least 300 miles per day", well, go for it. But I don't know anyone who is getting that rate, or (consistently) that kind of loaded miles in a cargo van, so I'd be sceptical...

That'll work, JR - as soon as they perfect the teleportation thing they did on Star Trek, so you can get to a brokedown truck pretty quick. Until then, though, I doubt you could make enough money (even with what mechanics charge) to cover the travel costs. :p

One other thing to consider: the stress and workload for a nursing student are frequently VERY high - do you think that it would help your wife to have you gone so much, while she's in school? Nursing school is a fulltime job in itself. Adding a child and household responsibilities can make it...

It's actually better than I thought it would be, given that the cellphones tend to have some dead zones. Long as I'm near a sizeable city, it works pretty well. As much as I type here, you had to ask? :D PS Patience is not my best quality - if it doesn't go fast, I don't stick with it.

A fuel hike when Ike strikes?

I just topped the tanks at Pilot in Lafayette, La, where it's $3.96/gal for diesel.

In a cargo van, scouting free wifi was easy, but it's not so in a D unit - I too, use an aircard, from the comfort of the truck. Costs $60/month (Verizon) for high speed, and it is, long as I'm somewhere near a major city. Usually. The major truckstops offer their own wifi, by the day, month, or...

A fuel hike when Ike strikes?

I don't usually pass along the "sky is falling!" stuff, but this one seems credible, given the source: the owner of a gas station. He says he got a call from Exxon tonight, warning him that the price of fuel may jump by $1.00/gal tomorrow, given the probable hit to Houston's refineries. I'm...

    heat for layover ingargo van?

Lots of different options: insulate the van, isolate the sleeping area to avoid heating unnecessary space, an arctic sleeping bag, several layers of clothing & blankets, a small propane heater, even Sterno can heat a small space enough to keep you from freezing - one driver used a large candle...

    Skid pad Training !

Ya know, P51, I was trying SO hard to resist the 'cheap shot'.... but I think most of us already know how to avoid the obstetrician - it's a whole different kind of loss of control that I worry about. :p

    Can we make it ???

Latest predictions expect Ike to make landfall on the Gulf Coast - you should be far enough inland to stay clear of the really bad weather.

    Dogs Death

Another option is to get a large cooler, put the dog on ice and take her home for burial. Even though I've done postmortem care on quite a few deceased people without batting an eyelash, the very idea of hauling a beloved pet around in a cooler just gives me the shudders. Maybe that's...

What's best for the solo driver: Van of Striaght Truck?

Leaving the money out of it, it's still a matter of preference, assuming one is qualified to drive either. A straight truck is more comfortable, but the tradeoff is that it won't go places a van can, like the drive through windows. A straight truck is eligible for more loads, because it can...

I've read a few posts here over the years that illustrate why dispatchers feel safer behind bulletproof glass....Can't say as I blame them.

    Dogs Death

When Susie told me her intention to bury her beloved Jodi, if necessary, I asked if she has a shovel. I didn't mean to be insensitive, cause I know how much pets mean, I was just agreeing with Linder: it's better to have a plan, and the means to carry it out. I surely don't envy anyone the task...

How to legally cheat your drivers (modified "for the children")

If that's true, I for one think he's spending it productively. Steve, have you ever heard the quote by Simon Weisenthal: "For evil to flourish, it is only necessary that good men do nothing"? IMO, greed and deception are evil. I don't understand the "So what?" attitude displayed by some...
