    fuel surcharges

Just a quick math question. What's the difference between $1.00 a mile and a .40 surcharge and a flat rate of $1.40 a mile without a surcharge?

    What is the law?

How about independent people like me? I only have one vehicle, so it's not like I have a truck number for it. If people want a truck number, I just tell them 1. Would it be dishonest to double dip and put truck number 1 on one set of docs and truck 2 on the other? If it's my authority, I can...

    Anyone in Texarkana or Dallas???

I wish I was there, only because that would mean that I wouldn't be in Des Moines any longer! I've been having the worst week I've had in ages, which means that next week will be great, right? There is a steakhouse chain in Texas called Texas Land & Cattle. Dallas has a couple locations...

    school,1957 vs 2007

For me, snakes were more fun alive. I would catch them and then use them to terrorize neighborhood girls, or my mother. She was deathly afraid of them and I took great delight in bringing one into the house.

    Stop Smoking Now!!!

I think that "outside" should be defined as a certain distance from the door. Nothing bothers me more than going into a building when all the smokers who have stepped outside are two feet from the door and you have to walk through a thick cloud of the stuff just to get inside.

    Stop Smoking Now!!!

To paraphrase the Apostle Paul, I have the liberty to do all kinds of things that aren't beneficial. I don't want to take away the right of a smoker to have a cigarette and I don't like the government stepping in and mandating what a private business can and can't do regarding that, but I also...

    Stop Smoking Now!!!

It kind of burns me too that your thread went in a direction that you didn't intend. For the record, I don't smoke and never did. I grew up with parents who smoked in the house and by the time I got out on my own I couldn't stand the smell of it. I don't think the point of this discussion is...

    Sprinter

Yep, cheap stuff they were. They looked pretty good for the first 60k miles, then just went downhill from there.

Brokers and bid boards are the problem.

The bid boards giveth and they taketh away. Sure there are times where I see the bidding keep going lower and lower for a load from a certain area when there are a lot of people in that area competing for the freight, but there are also times where I've gotten loads for a lot more because there...

    looking for loads

I don't see where that would be much of a problem. A couple broker loads and you have that covered.

    looking for loads

I have a million liability and 100k cargo. That seems to be something of a standard with a lot of the larger carriers. I get some good paying things from FECC, so upping the insurance to that level would be worth it.

How Does it Feel to Buy Fuel?

It's done quite a few things to me. One is just a feeling of helplessness. It's not like we can carpool or combine that trip to the grocery store with a trip to the bank. All of those tips might help the average joe car driver, but not us. There seemed to be a mental jolt when a fill up for...

    Stop Smoking Now!!!

We can say whatever we want about the different legal issues regarding smoking, but when you look at the personal stories we have here, sometimes you have to set aside the arguments and offer what support you can, whether it's a kind word, a shoulder to cry on, or prayer. While I do think that...

    Stop Smoking Now!!!

At places like KFC, everyone does, even if nobody's smoking.

    Bid Boards

NLM doesn't want to deal with little people. I sometimes will do NLM loads that I get from another carrier when they book it and then their driver turns it down. I don't get too many of those though. The last time I talked to them I was told that they aren't taking on any new carriers right...

Bob Tail Insurance on Cargo Van

I went with Allstate for my Spinter, but mainly because we have our house and car with them also. All my coverage comes out to about $125 a month and that's with a million liability. I think the agent gave me a good discount because of the other business he gets from us.

    Bid Boards

I've just got one vehicle, and I've got partner agreements with several larger carriers.

    Big Rig the Movie

The last I heard was that a lot of stores are having trouble getting copies to stock because they can't find anybody to deliver them for the rates they're willing to pay.

    Joke of the day

I asked a broker the other day if he was a tax exempt organization. He wanted to know why I asked that and I said, "So I can do that run and write it off as a charitable contribution."
