Where is the best place to call home to be near the frieght lanes?

I live in Cincinnati and I get home quite a bit. It seems that I often find a load that goes to one of the surrounding cities and the deadhead home is only around 100 miles. Someone a few posts ago mentioned the I-75 or I-71 corridors and I would have to second that.

    why do we do it

That's the key. There's enough revenue in the loads to make a good enough living. It's just a matter of enough of that revenue getting to the driver. Some of the brokers are charging more with the fuel being higher but aren't passing on the increase. There are some good ones out there too...

    good fuel price

I just fueled at the J at exit 2 on I-65, the one near the Kentucky/Tennessee border, and I paid $3.77. I'm in a Sprinter, so I'm not concerned about IFTA.

    You Be The Carrier

Good ideas there. When I was a leased on driver, I often felt that dispatchers didn't really understand what drivers go through. Personally I think a dispatcher should actually do some driving for a week or two, but maybe that wouldn't work with some of them. At one company I had a dispatcher...

    King for a day

The other day I was thinking about things I would change if I was in charge for a day, kind of like when Mike McConnell talks about what he'll do when he's Earth Czar. I got to thinking about just what I would do with the trucking industry and I came up with a pretty good list. 1. I...

    Diesel Nozzle Adapter

I've used a funnel before. It's kind of tricky because of the high rate of flow those large nozzles have. There are a few places that don't have diesel on the front pumps and that's kind of a pain. I have a funnel that I use to put my additive in and I just use that at the large pumps if I...

    Let's Talk Deadheading home!

I heard from a Panther driver I met at a truck stop that they have an acccount on Getloaded.com - The Internet Load Board for the Trucking Industry and they will give drivers the login information so you can search for LTLs. I think the rule is that if you find one you want you book it and then...

    OOIDA tour

OOIDA membership really pays for itself. They helped me out so much when I decided to get my authority and they have given me a lot of information that has helped me be more profitable. Maybe I'll make a point of stopping in the next time I'm in KC. I've always wanted to.

    the tortoise and the hare

I think it's different for the independent driver. If you're leased on with a company and you're headed into a competitive area, getting there earlier might be of some benefit, but I don't think so in my case. I will often check for loads along the way and be calling brokers or shippers while...

    the tortoise and the hare

I have a Sprinter and I have noticed that I get pretty good mileage if I keep it under 70 mph. I usually keep it around 67 as well, regardless of the speed limit. I just finished a run from Minneapolis to Cincinnati and there was a stretch going through Wisconsin where I'm pretty sure the same...

    C.o.l.a

For the record, I am independent. I turned in those glasses when I got my authority. In my case, I do set my rates by refusing to run anything that pays less than what I want. Even drivers leased onto a carrier could do that if enough of them did it and the carriers had trouble moving loads...

    Weird Road signs

I've always gotten a chuckle out of that one.

    C.o.l.a

The rates are going up, at least for the shippers. Some of the ones I talk to are saying that they're paying more to ship things now than they used to. And you know what? Unless you're dealing straight with a shipper, the carriers aren't even seeing those higher rates. The middle man...

That's one of my favorites, because it means that I'm only 25 minutes from home.

    Favorite stretch of road

I just did that stretch the other day from Albany to Lake Placid. The mountains were all snow covered and it was absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed that drive.

Glenn Beck Interviews A Fleet Owner

Glenn Beck has been a radio talk show host for a few years and started a show on Headline News about a year ago. For the record, he has been very vocal against the Mexican truck program and NAFTA. He's a pretty sensible person for the most part. His radio show is fairly entertaining, somewhat...

    Flying J

I always look for the J because of the free showers for van drivers, but I stay away from that one. I either go to the Petro at exit 28 and just pay for my shower or go down to Peculiar to the J there. That one's newer and much nicer.
