A while back I had to make two back to back delivers to Port Columbus Airport, to the tarmac to meet a charter aircraft .... backed right up to the plane and transfered the freight.
At the security gate I presented my TWIC card for identification, the TSA assigned security guard had no clue what it was.
When I mentioned it was just like the one she was wearing, (except it said TWIC), she commented she had no clue what it was, and could she please see my CDL.
Yep, TWIC cards are a joke .... I will not renew mine ... oh wait, I'm retiring .... I don't have to renew it anyway!

Enforcement must vary from port to port. I know at the port of Savannah, GA. No one gets on the port without a twics or an escort with a twic. There are a few people with twic cards making pretty good money escorting truckers that do not have twic on and off the port. Jerry Lee

Do a search on this site and any other trucker forum, Craig, and you will find that it is just one of many very redundant identity credentials being used to soak truck drivers needlessly.

I agree. I delivered a few right hand drive freightliners going to new zealand to the savannah port and i had to wait outside with a few of our other drivers while the 2 guys with twic came out and ran them in for us. And each truck took an hour for inspection and we run 8 at a time.
TWIC will go away soon, then be replaced. It is a TAX on drivers. It has nothing to do with security.
LA Porte Texas there You will need one for those big Tanker loads of Hazmat. You will also need them in the Port of Angels in CA Los Angels CA.
Needless to say.
TWIC is useless because it is just ANOTHER hoop (tax) to jump through (pay) dumped onto drivers. There is no NEED for a driver that has hazmat to get TWIC. That driver has already had the needed background check. There is no need for a driver who has a D.O.D. clearance to get TWIC. That driver has already had a background check. How many times are drivers going to be REQUIRED to pay for background checks just to be able to do their job and earn a living? ONE background check should be enough.
The city of Angels or Port of Los Angels they make u put Electronic Transponsders on the truck so they can track you as of last u had to be carb compliant to get into that port as well. 2007 or new Tractor will work (Carb Complient). Cost more money as well as having to have a Twic Card as well. Yup they want the money.

How can you say the TWIC program is useless? It is anything but. It has been very useful in appropriating funds for the federal treasury.
The Government must raise a certain amount of revenue. If they don't get the money from one source they must get it from another. If people don't want taxes raised on the the top 2% of money earners or on the big corporations in order to try to influence their decisions to create jobs in the USA instead of in China, Mexico,etc. the government must raise revenue in other ways.
If not enough money is raised through income taxation then it must be raised through fees and other forms of taxation. License fees, tolls, public transportation, taxes on gasoline, taxes on cigarettes,etc. Revenue can also be raised by requiring new fee based regulations such as the TWIC program.
Fees imposed on the professional driver is an attractive way to raise revenue. It is much easier to impose new regulations on professional drivers than almost any other group. History shows that the trucking industry is incapable of organizing a united front capable of successful fighting the government's oppressive regulations and fees imposed on it.
No, the TWIC program in not useless. It allows the government to transfer the economic burden from an important and powerful group in the American populace to one that is weak and regarded with apathy by most Americans.
