Landstar Agents

Agents? I'm not sure if this is the correct term for the people that book Landstar loads. Can someone with first hand knowledge explain how these agents work?

Are they independent agents?

Do shippers call the agents for trucks or directly to Landstar.

Agents are spread all over the country, are they limited to booking loads from their area only?

Are there separate agents for each Landstar division or can one agent book freight across all divisions.

If BOCs have access to the Landstar load board, where do the agents figure in this system.

I will probably have more question as answers are posted. Please, first hand knowledge only. No sister's boy friend's brother stuff. If you have questions about Landstar agents, please add to my list.

1. no

2. they call agents in most cases

3. they can book freight all over the country

4. That's a hard one since some agents are both carrier group and LEAM agents.

5. Agents post the loads on the load board for carrier group, not LS corp. LEAM doesn't post unless they need a tractor most of the time.

LEAM 3798

Why not call an agent direct? They'll chat with you.

Define independent? They work for themselves, as I do, under the Landstar umbrella. I would define that as independent.

There is no "direct to Landstar", (I believe the exception to that might exclusive government contracts), the shippers call LS.

Nah .... they book nationwide, and some of them international.

Are there separate agents for each Landstar division or can one agent book freight across all divisions.

Yes, they do, but each division has a main focus.

Agents populate that load board.

They are independant (work for themselves) representing L/S.
Shippers call the Agents for a truck. Shippers are their customers. Most successful L/S agents work on inbound freight, but can go anywhere.
They have no area. Several cities have several agents.
That has changed somewhat but I think they are agents for L/SEA and Ranger Div. Like I said that has changed some.
L/Star board is posted by the agents with what the load pays, weight, destination and some other stuff. If you want the load and your a BCO or an approved carrier you call the Agent listing the freight and get more info an or commit to the load.
There are agents (example) in Augusta Ga that pull freight from every state to every state. The agent gets on a national accounts list with a large customer and pull from all their locations. One example.
A good operater (truck) that runs for a large Agency and does a good job will never run out of work.
When I ran a D unit for L/SEA, I worked for 3 agents. My truck was set up to do anything. L/gate, and that stuff. They new that and they also knew I was always on time with a load so they called me. But you have to get with the right agent.

Working as a outside carrier (Panther) we have done quite a few loads for different agents that we have obtained ourselves. All have went well and paid very decent.

They are more diversified than most and they always pay. My only complaint is they will charge you for everything they do, no freebies. They're freight base is other than automotive. They do ship Auto but not as a primary. They are big into government and defense. They are well known thruout manufacturing with a good name and they are big.

Most of what we have done has been manufacturing. Don't think we have done anything that was automotive. Easy to work with and Panther is already set up in their systems. One call basically does it all.

We do a lot of work for them, and even as a partner carrier I find that building relationships with certain agents is a must. Each one is almost like a separate customer.
