GM to add 1,200 jobs in Ohio

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Motors announced Tuesday it would add 1,200 jobs to its Lordstown, Ohio plant in preparation for the launch of its newest small car.

Detroit-based GM said the new third shift at the Ohio plant would support the production of its 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, which will take the place of the Chevrolet Cobalt.

Production of the new compact car isn't expected to begin until the third quarter of this year. But once underway, GM estimates the new production schedule will generate $47 million in additional payroll, $470,000 in local income taxes, and $1.4 million in state income tax.

"Adding a third shift to build Cruze is an investment with impact far beyond General Motors," said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America, in a press release. "It's an investment in the long-term value of Lordstown and the prosperity of Ohio."

The Lordstown, Ohio, factory, which will produce Cruze models for the United States and Canada, was built in 1966. Some 14.3 million GM cars have been manufactured at the plant, including 1 million Chevrolet Cobalts since the vehicle's launch in 2004.

You do know Chef that Toyota's loss in the market is offset by Honda's gains?

The word around town is that Ford is second with a sales gain and GM is behind them - far behind.

The administration has been telling a pretty good story about the success of GM but the actual numbers are being closely guarded.

I think it is not a good thing to consider the planning of a third shift until they actually start producing the vehicle and selling it without over producing it. It is kind of like figuring that it will be 1928 again with Ford's new Model A and people will flock to the show rooms to stand in line for hours to buy it.

But honestly it all goes back to the arrogance of the company - We will build, You will buy - which has failed them so far.

oh i agree, the need for a 3rd shift could very easily end up being wishful thinking...and i am not all that convinced it will happen for a while down the road....

As far as market share, who has seen any numbers out of GM? and they certainly are not getting the best press, and it kind of looks like barry messed up here...lol....

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- After resigning as president and CEO of General Motors in December, Fritz Henderson might have gone into hiding or decided to sit out the harsh Michigan winter on a Florida beach.

Instead, here he is popping up again, this time as a consultant to GM on international operations at the very fancy fee of $59,090 a month for 20 hours of work a month. That works out to almost $3,000 an hour for a CEO who was ousted after just eight months on the job.

Wagoner is still floating around, from what I heard he did some consulting work for GM.

They need to get rid of the entire executive group, and get others from outside the company.

My brother works at the Flat Rock plant, an inspector, not a Ford employee. He has been working overtime. Ford is laying off and might shut down for a week or two. MMMM, I wonder, would a "green" mustang sell better? Like a Mustang hybred? LOL

He works for Auto Alliance I think it is called. They inspected the Mazdas as well when that plant was a "joint" operation. They have not been made Ford employees since Mazda left.

The are quite a few "Auto Alliance" employees at Flat Rock, my neighbor works there as a "Alliance" employ. The wages are lower then the "Ford" uaw employees.....i think that has to do with them not being forced to become "Ford" employees.

Most likely correct. Ford does not want to take them on either. Just what they need, more employees.
