It's hard to imagine these kind of boneheads still exist

I almost have to wonder if this is a hoax. I don't know which is worse, the total denial of the marriage or that this idiot thinks that because they are not married they won't have kids...Talk about a moron.

Interracial couple denied marriage license in La.

NEW ORLEANS – A Louisiana justice of the peace said he refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial couple out of concern for any children the couple might have. Keith Bardwell, justice of the peace in Tangipahoa Parish, says it is his experience that most interracial marriages do not last long.

"I'm not a racist. I just don't believe in mixing the races that way," Bardwell told the Associated Press on Thursday. "I have piles and piles of black friends. They come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom. I treat them just like everyone else."

Bardwell said he asks everyone who calls about marriage if they are a mixed race couple. If they are, he does not marry them, he said.

Bardwell said he has discussed the topic with blacks and whites, along with witnessing some interracial marriages. He came to the conclusion that most of black society does not readily accept offspring of such relationships, and neither does white society, he said.

"There is a problem with both groups accepting a child from such a marriage," Bardwell said. "I think those children suffer and I won't help put them through it."

If he did an interracial marriage for one couple, he must do the same for all, he said.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Bardwell estimates that he has refused to marry about four couples during his career, all in the past 2 1/2 years.

Beth Humphrey, 30, and 32-year-old Terence McKay, both of Hammond, say they will consult the U.S. Justice Department about filing a discrimination complaint.

Humphrey, an account manager for a marketing firm, said she and McKay, a welder, just returned to Louisiana. She is white and he is black. She plans to enroll in the University of New Orleans to pursue a masters degree in minority politics.

"That was one thing that made this so unbelievable," she said. "It's not something you expect in this day and age."

Humphrey said she called Bardwell on Oct. 6 to inquire about getting a marriage license signed. She says Bardwell's wife told her that Bardwell will not sign marriage licenses for interracial couples. Bardwell suggested the couple go to another justice of the peace in the parish who agreed to marry them.

"We are looking forward to having children," Humphrey said. "And all our friends and co-workers have been very supportive. Except for this, we're typical happy newlyweds."

"It is really astonishing and disappointing to see this come up in 2009," said American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana attorney Katie Schwartzmann. She said the Supreme Court ruled in 1967 "that the government cannot tell people who they can and cannot marry."

The ACLU sent a letter to the Louisiana Judiciary Committee, which oversees the state justices of the peace, asking them to investigate Bardwell and recommending "the most severe sanctions available, because such blatant bigotry poses a substantial threat of serious harm to the administration of justice."

"He knew he was breaking the law, but continued to do it," Schwartzmann said.

According to the clerk of court's office, application for a marriage license must be made three days before the ceremony because there is a 72-hour waiting period. The applicants are asked if they have previously been married. If so, they must show how the marriage ended, such as divorce.

Other than that, all they need is a birth certificate and Social Security card.

The license fee is $35, and the license must be signed by a Louisiana minister, justice of the peace or judge. The original is returned to the clerk's office.

"I've been a justice of the peace for 34 years and I don't think I've mistreated anybody," Bardwell said. "I've made some mistakes, but you have too. I didn't tell this couple they couldn't get married. I just told them I wouldn't do it."

"I didn't tell this couple they couldn't get married. I just told them I wouldn't do it."

And there ya go. A citizen exercising his right not to do something. It's not like he's the only judge in town. They can have another judge sign the marriage certificate, or a minister, and they're married. No one actually even has to perform a ceremony or say, "I now pronounce you...". It's real easy. Well, unless you're gay.

"She plans to enroll in the University of New Orleans to pursue a masters degree in minority politics."

I'd comment on that, but I won't. Even though I just did. Sorta.

Of COURSE racist boneheads still exsist in this country. Obama is a PRIME example. Racism is NOT ONLY a problem for us white folk. You can find in from ANY color, ethnic group, national origan or religion. Most people are NOT racaist. Most people just want to be left alone and wish to leave others alone. We all have our own lives to lead.

Our friendly Federal Government ENCOURGES racism. All these stupid protected groups. We are ALL people. That should be it. The Feds, however, are in the divide and conqure mode. It serves their purpose to pit one bunch against another.

This is the example of redefining meanings. Where is this racist?

It isn't, the guy is not saying it is wrong, he is not screaming that his race is better than others nor is he interfering with their right to get married.

His concern, whether right or wrong from your point of view has some merit in today's society where there is a serious and meaningful division within the different races and he is using his freedom to make a choice that doesn't take away form others and did so politely.

The real problem is that we as society don't know what racism is anymore. We think if we are against someone or even a race through ignorance, it is automatically racism.

Greg, you know full well that ANY opinion that does NOT agree with the PC opinion is racist. This attitude gets worse every year. The Feds feed it by coming up with at least one new protected class per year. Pretty soon they will run out of people to protect!!! What a total joke. It is ONLY meant to divide the nation. There can be NO other reason.

I feel your pain my friend. Allowing these criminals to remain in this country is criminal in itself. It is a pure slap in the face to all those who put out the time and effort to join this nation in a proper and legal manner. ALL of my grand-parents and most of my great-grandparents did it properly. I would find it hard to trust someone who's very first act in the nation that they CLAIM they want to make their home is a crime.

You are 100% correct, they need to go. There is NO valid excuse for this. It is being allowed as a matter of policy. They are looking for votes. They are trying to change the demographics of this nation to insure a socialist take over. They KNOW that it cannot happen otherwise.

Do you know Barney Rubble? It would not surprise me as you obviously still live in the stone age. How in any way can you construe this judge's opinion as "protecting" children of mixed marriages? He says he doesn't want them to be married! That's not even the most ridiulous issue of all this. The idea that a "mixed" couple, or any couple for that matter won't have kids because they aren't married is asinine. Duh! look around in any town in America. It is no secret that the erosion of the family unit has led to breakdown of morals, work ethic, and sense of self worth. It also leads to unprecedented upticks in crime and violence. In this issue, 2 people take a stand and try to do the right thing and are batted down. Did I read somewhere on this forum you were once a police officer? If that is true you have seen plenty of this up close and you certainly know what I am talking about.

While it MAY be racist what this man did, it also may NOT be. I cannot say for sure what was truely in this man's heart. Again, while it MAY be stone age, it is also possible that this man WAS only concerned for the possible children. I would LOVE to know the ENTIRE story. I doubt very much that ANYTHING in ANY of our so-called news outlets are really giving the TOTAL picture. THAT would be rare.

It make no difference what was in this man's heart. He was elected to make rulings based on the law. It's been 45 years since the Civil Rights Act was passed. It's time to get over it.
By the way, I liked it when you used to sign your posts with
"Layoutshooter" why don't you do that anymore?

What do I need to "get over"? I was NOT arguing the points of law. I was ONLY speaking of what that man might have been thinking or not thinking. I am not a racist nor do I condone racism. As to elected officials upholding the law, that is the biggest joke of all. Since when was that EVER a concern of our elected officials? That is doubly true for those who are at the Federal level. Graft, corruption, perjury and influence pedeling are the rule there, NOT the exception.

I didn't say you are racist. I don't know if anyone here is a racist or not. That isn't even the issue. As far as the graft and corruption, etc., The judge WAS elected to follow the law. If he doesn't do it, he should go. That's my deal.

So what about the signature?

First off, I see the word LAYOUTSHOOTER in bold black letters, so it it there. Second, I KNOW you did NOT call me a racist, I was just stating a fact. Third, I was NOT talking about laws, civil rights, or ANYTHING along those lines. I was more or less musing over what an individual might have been thinking. Nothing more. I find the thoughts of others interesting and enlightening and make every effort to try to learn what others may think. Go ahead, laugh at that and ridicule it, BUT, you do NOT know me in REAL life, I think you would be VERY surpized IF we ever sat and talked.
