Administration Official: "Sebelius Misspoke." "Nothing has changed". (WH Healthcare)

Administration Official: "Sebelius Misspoke."

An administration official said tonight that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "misspoke" when she told CNN this morning that a government run health insurance option "is not an essential part" of reform. This official asked not to be identified in exchange for providing clarity about the intentions of the President. The official said that the White House did not intend to change its messaging and that Sebelius simply meant to echo the president, who has acknowledged that the public option is a tough sell in the Senate and is, at the same time, a must-pass for House Democrats, and is not, in the president's view, the most important element of the reform package.

A second official, Linda Douglass, director of health reform communications for the administration, said that President Obama believed that a public option was the best way to reduce costs and promote competition among insurance companies, that he had not backed away from that belief, and that he still wanted to see a public option in the final bill.

"Nothing has changed.," she said. "The President has always said that what is essential that health insurance reform lower costs, ensure that there are affordable options for all Americans and increase choice and competition in the health insurance market. He believes that the public option is the best way to achieve these goals."

A third White House official, via e-mail, said that Sebelius didn't misspeak. "The media misplayed it," the third official said.

Appearing on Face the Nation, press secretary Robert Gibbs said that fostering competition and choice were non-negotiable, but the specific mechanism designed to do so was up for discussion. That's been interpreted as a signal that the White House is getting behind the idea of adding publicly owned health cooperatives to the menu of choices that consumers without insurance will recieve. Still, this isn't exactly a walk-back -- the White House, Gibbs included, have mused favorably about the co-ops before.

On Saturday, Mr. Obama defended the public plan before an audience in Colorado Springs. At the same time, he said that the government option was not the single critical element of reform, pointing instead to the provisions preventing insurance companies from discriminating against people, requiring them to offer plans to everyone, and capping premium increases.

"The public option, whether we have it or we don't have it, is not the entirety of health care reform. This is just one sliver of it. One aspect of it," Obama said.

This has been a refrain the White House has used for weeks, but not until Saturday did Mr. Obama voice it so explicitly.
The perception that the White House had backed away from the public plan has roiled many prominent Democrats, who took to their blogs, and to Twitter, to protest.

Nope - one person does: Linda Douglass - she's a trained PR flack and understands that the last thing you want to do in terms of winning a PR war on this issue is to do exactly what the other buffoons have done within the last 24 to 48 hours: give up and cede the very thing that you really want .... retards ....

As political comedy, this is the equivalent of the Keystone Kops .... it really doesn't get much better than this ....

Look for major spin and lotsa talking going on over the coming week .... be interesting to see how they parse it ..... the opposition will be on this like a dog on a bone (as well they should)

How well this shot-in-the-foot goes for Obama will depend entirely on how much power she really has, and how successful she is able to be, in getting all the King's men (and women) back on the reservation ..... and on message ......

Lets see, you "cap" increases and "Force" additional coverage. Then STILL REQUIRE the massive cash reserves that both State and Federal Government have placed on the insurance companies. SO, you increase the losses, not allow increases to cover the losses and still maintain all other monetary requirements. The math does NOT add up. It is very simple math, cover more people, cover high risk people, costs go up. You either cover those costs or go out of business. OH MY!! Is that not what Barry and Co. are after?

ok so what do we do....example another driver here paid an insurance company for 20 years faithfully and on time....he comes up with a heart murmur , the ins co. finds out and bingo NO renewal!! whats with that????

In SD that can't happen....thats why rates are expensive...

That is EXACTLY why we have to SLOW DOWN and REALLY study the problem. It is NOT as simple a Barry wants to make it out to be. Much of the problem, and high costs, are directly due to government regulations. More ill concieved regulations will only bring more of the same.

We have NEVER really looked at this as a Nation. We scream and shout and demand. The problem is we can't fix it until we know what the problems are, WHO are causing them and WHY they exsist. When we answer those questions we can start to come up with answers that will work.

One thing is very clear, the Government has NO clue on how to keep costs down. They are NOT the answer.

It has taken hundreds of years to get into this mess, it will NOT be fixed in 6 months. It is going to take an HONEST appraisal of all facets of the problem and the will to want to repair it. Again, the government does NOT fit that bill. They are NEVER honest and are not out to fix things, just control the economy.

There are many answers out there and we are going to need ALL of them. The problems are multi-faced and the solutions must be as well. There is NO quick fix.

One of the most obvious fixes is....

GET the Illegals out that are draining state resources so they could afford emergency care!!! Billions being wasted on Illegals that is money that could be used....and THEN move on toward the other problems...start from the bottom up instead of the top down....

Maybe something of a "High risk pool" like they do with car insurance high risk drivers... The people pay and the insurance companies pool a fund and the STATE.

Now you are thinking!! All GOOD solutions come from the bottom up. The government's role should be that of facilitator only. They should make some resorces available to fund the studies needed but NOT direct the answers. As to illegals, I think I made my feelings clear to my congressman and senators in that letter that I sent them. I can't WAIT to hear their response to that one!! Not the I REALLY expect one. They do a GREAT job of ignoring anyone that does not agree with them.
