Bright Spot in Downturn: New Hiring Is Robust
Marilynn K. Yee/The New York Times

Dan Glickberg, executive vice president for Fairway, at the New Jersey store, which just hired 350 people.

But not everyone knows the brighter side to the equation: deep in the maw of the deepest recession since the Great Depression, millions are still being hired.

So, while 4.8 million workers were laid off or chose to leave their jobs in February, employers across the country hired 4.3 million workers that month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

LOL, when the Bush admin talked about these kind of jobs, he was lambasted by the MSM because they we "nothing" retail jobs, not hi tech or manufacturing, no the liberals are doing the same thing and we are suppose to jump up and down and make barry feel good................right........

Point well made - this side of the coin was NEVER exposed in the NY Times or any other facet of the MSM while Bush was in office. The only stories were about jobs lost - not jobs created and the net result. Now the spin is totally different to fit the liberal agenda of the media.

"So, while 4.8 million workers were laid off or chose to leave their jobs in February, employers across the country hired 4.3 million workers that month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. "

Had a Republican been in office, the headline would have been "Nearly Five Million Jobs Lost in February; Unemployment Nears Ten Percent".

is fuddle duddle canadian for pinhead?

The doomsayers always have to attach something anti Obama to any good news....even thou he hadn't a hand in it...
I think their afraid he might get the credit..their absolute hatred...

For once I'd like to see someone say how happy they are for the country and to see America slowly pulling itself up without all the disclaimers...I think I am more American then some Americans...I can leave my political feelings at the door...and support the country better...in general.

Well OVM, the first thing is that we are not recovering from anything - the stock market increases are not a good indication of what is going on and we are still putting money into the system which is bad. Job creation is not really going on, I don't see a lot of jobs being created to help with the unemployed but rather new jobs that are being filled by people coming out of college and high school. Look at Michigan for a moment, when I was laid off, there were 5000 just in the department alone across the company, when all was said an done there was over 11,000 from my state and with other lay offs there were over 55,000 that year as newly unemployed. Our great governor said sometime in 2005 that we were on the road to recovery, even though from 2003 to 2005 110,000 were unemployed. She made the claim that because a business here or there was hiring 200 here or 400 there, that this was a recovery.

the second thing is with all of this doom and gloom, the American people seem to be not like others who have faced simular situations, the Ameican people are not revolting or demanding free anything - look around the only one's who are protesting now are the people for Immigration reform which will screw up more of the country's economy. It seems that we are resolute in seeing a true recovery and we are not panicking as a nation.

Hi

Where I work needs to hire more people but they are not.I wonder how many other companies are doing the same thing?
My machine has went from 30,000 units per shift to 45,000 units on most jobs and on one job we have went from 45,000 units per shift to 70,000 units with one less person on the machine and my operator working 2 machines instead of one.Our shift superviser doubles as our material handler because our material handler is now a floating feeder.
This increase in production probably looks good to managment, but what they are not seeing is the increase in injuries.I have had 3 in the last 3 months and one guy ran a piece of tubing through his finger last night. He bandaged it back up and went back to work because he can't afford to lose his job.
So to make a long opinion short I feel that companies are looking at short term gains instead of what is best for the economy. So the the average Joe tightens their belt while corporate America keeps playing its games.

There is a few companies squeezing the buck...I've seen it in my deliveries...HOWEVER some claim they've had a temperary boost in orders and they didn't want to call people back from layoff prematurely and mess up the unemployment payments(excuse number 101)...some are truly making people work more machines where possible...

I won't speak for the others. I am assuming the worst will happen BASED on history. What they are doing is worse than what was done during the Great Depression.

If it gets old, then la-de-da. Whatever happens will happen regardless if you get bored or not of our pessimism/realism. If you want to dig thru piles of crap to find a 4-leaf clover, then be my guest.

Those games are called "uncertainty". Why hire someone back when things could get twice as bad two weeks from now? BTW... Average Joe is learning that a J-O-B is not an entitlement; but rather something to be treasured.

That's where you're mistaken. I DO have hope... just not for the near future. If you want to see miserable existence without hope, check out the History Channel when they show the Hoovervilles of the depression. I just HOPE it doesn't last that long; and I HOPE we're as civilized as that group was.

We're not even close to what's being predicted. The worst is yet to come.

The worse is yet to come MAYBE.... a lot has changed since the 30's.... stock market automatically shuts down for a cooling off period....lessons learned from history....While the circumstances may mimic the past the results could be different.....notice I said could be? eh?

The basics are the same, however, to the 30s. The bubble that burst in Oct '29 was created the same way... by trying to prevent a recession, you only delay the inevitable, and make it worse by doing so.

The "panic button" for the stock market won't help. In the depression, there were only 2 or 3 panic days. The market lost most of its value over years of steady decline. How many times has the stock market closed this time, due to losing 550 pts? I don't think it has. It's just been a steady drop.

To be honest, I TRULY hope you are right, and I'm wrong! It's not like I want this to happen.

My son was laid off last Monday, he was working at a new job on Tuesday. No it doesn't pay as much, and he now has to travel across town, but it's a job and will pay his bills.
What I don't understand is, if things are so bad, how is it that all these people can still afford to go out to eat? I mean come on, have you seen any restaurants with empty parking lots?
When the talking heads scream it's as bad as the great depression, I sure have to wonder.
