    hydroplaning

I have had my steers hydroplaning on me at over 100,000lbs. So I would add a yes to that too. It's a bit hairy when it happens, I'll tell you that for free.

    Lift Gate Safety

Well most of our lifts were tuck unders that were like a ramp when down. The most important thing though was that they did have a flip up stop on them. I don't think it WAS luck that I wasn't hurt. I think it was more my safety oriented attitude than luck. As I said though YMMV.

    Lift Gate Safety

Interesting I hauled for a nursery for two years full time and had the opposite experience. In fact, I had places where I could choose to use the gate, or a dock and often chose to use the gate. Many many times I had two 1000# carts on my gate with no problems at all. I enjoyed the work because...

    Canada Runnin' West?

Yeah I figured it was a bit of a lost cause when it took this long to get an answer. For the record Alta stands for Alberta, though it's most often shortened to AB. Thanks though for the reply

    Truckstops-81/85/95

Well it's definitely not in the east, but I want to give a shout out for Dads Truck stop. I15 exit 113 in Idaho falls Idaho. Great food, pretty waitresses, and the best damn showers in the country. Most Expediters probably won't get near it I suppose, but if you ever do it's well worth the stop.

    Canada Latest Crossings

Ahhhhh border fees, ain't they wonderful? Let's see I have made over a hundred crossings, but for most of them I had a sticker. The few times I didn't I have always hed to pay, even when I was bobtailing a half mile to p/u a trailer. Funny thing is I have mostly had good experiences crossing...

    Oh Deer!

I've definitely hit my share of deer over the years, but I've been very lucky when it comes to damage. One of the funnier (and lucky) hits I had happened on the 90 in New York. I was coming out of Jersey with a load of produce for TO. Typical dark and raining situation I was yakking on the CB...

    cargo van OTR drivers

That's a sweet setup you have there. I am amazed at the setups I have seen so far for cargo vans. The only problem I still have is that at 6'5" I need a wider sleeper than that. I need to figure out a system that will work without going to a dually aerocell. I'm working on a couple of ideas and...

Looking a gift Horse in the mouth

Ooh ooh ooh I getta tell a story ;) I used to run for a plant nursery. This was great job in that it was like a combination of expedited and P&D. IE you run like an expediter to an area then do a bunch of drops, then run home like an expediter, sometimes empty and sometimes after a pick or two...

    CoPilot Truck GPS

First off I hate Microshaft. In my spare time (HAHAHAHA) I'm a computer geek. I use Linux for almost everything I do. The ONLY reason I still have a winblows partition at all is MS Streets and trips. This program is brilliant. I cannot comment on CoPilot at all as I haven't used it. Also MS is...

    Gas Prices

As for why they would idle in those conditions I have no idea. But as to why they had to be on high idle, here's the deal. With a class 8 diesel engine, (and to be honest any diesel engine) high idle cuts down on wear and tear on the engine. It lessens the buildup of corrosive acids in the...

    Hmmm....

Actually that was the thread that got me thinking about what would happen if the DOT requires logs in cargo vans. The aerodynamics of that unit are excellent and as such the mileage should be pretty good. If you had to log anyway I would think there would be better revenue opportunities with a...

    Hmmm....

I was sitting here thinking, it seems more than likely to me, that DOT is going to start requiring logs on cargo vans soon. What I was speculating about was what would happen then? Do you think there would suddenly be a demand for cube vans? I'm a big guy 6'5" 250+ and realistically I can't use...

    Stupid things we have done

I love the chains that hold the gas cap in place. 400 miles once before I noticed and quietly put it back on, all the while hoping no one else had noticed LOL.

    Canada Runnin' West?

Lotus Land of course :) Most of the companies I have worked for have been BC or Alta based. I am not a big fan of eastern running. Of course that WAS with 53 footers and W900s. I suppose it wouldn't be as bad in straight truck. I just love where I live and would rather not relocate if I don't...

    Canada Runnin' West?

OK been an OTR runner and to be honest running 14,000 a month just to make a living is getting old. Any chance that a guy could make a living running expidited out west? I like my wide open spaces alot and prefer the lifestyle out here. I know I'm seeing more expiditers out this way, but I'm...

    Security Guards

I used to run OTR for H&R Transport. Being a (mostly) truckoad refer outfit, we hauled a lot of meat back and forth across the border. I ran into a similar problem with a plant in Kansas. Guy at the gate gave me a hell of a time, over some crap that I honestly don't remember. The part that stuck...
