Winter Driving Tips

We try to put off winter driving as long as possible but we know sooner or later we are going to get to drive in it.

Here are a few hints that help us stay safe:

When the road is shiny at night watch as cars pass to see if their tires are kicking up spray or if lack of spray then we are on ice.

When the windshield is getting covered in snow put the visors down to warm the top of the windshield to keep the snow from building up.

If the snow is dry and it wanting to ice the windshield turn the defrost to cold and "freeze" the windshield and the ice will blow off.   Wear a coat when doing this one!

Depending on where we are and my speed I often use my flashers.   I am not speedy on snow and ice and I want the other vehicles to know I am going slower.

In the winter we keep our fuel tanks fuller then usual for those just in case moments.   If the highway is shut down and we have to sit for hours we do not want to be low on fuel.

Carry extra blankets or long johns just in case the fuel does jell to stay warm.

Carry 911 for the fuel just in case we try to jell up.

When we get into bad weather we slow down drive with caution and monitor the weather and the CB.   If the road gets bad enough we pull off and in eight years we have only been in this situation twice.   If chains are required we use chains and proceed with caution and have found this works well for us.   We stay within our comfort zone and each of us has a different comfort zone.   Winter weather is not the time to out do your neighbor.
