Wildlife

In various places around the country, we have been told to not get out of our truck at night due to snakes.  I only have to be told once about this problem and there is not much that will get me out of our truck without the proper lighting.  In many of the safe havens in the western half of the USA, there are coyotes and we have to be careful with our pets so they do not get carried off.

We were in one very remote safe haven in the desert for the weekend and we had all kinds of wildlife to watch.  Someone had rigged up a small watering dish that stayed full so we saw coyotes drinking rabbits and a lot of road runners.  While we were out of the truck we kept a close eye on Molly our Cocker Spaniel as she was not watching for wildlife.

The most interesting to me was watching for black bears in Florida.  As we parked and got settled in the officer gave us a phone number to call if we saw a black bear and he was not joking.  The panhandle of Florida has a decent sized black bear population and they have learned to raid trash cans or the worst when people feed them.  As one article I read said “A fed bear is a dead bear” and I totally believe that.

Our youngest daughter was staying at a base in the Florida Panhandle for training and as they went back to their hotel a black bear was nosing around the hotel looking for food.  They were able to get a picture of the bear before he hightailed it to a different area and they were all in shock. Who really expects to see a bear in Florida?

As I sat in the safe haven waiting to unload I kept the phone number close so that if I did see a bear I could call quickly.  Now I am wondering which is worse black bears or snakes?  Either way, I stayed in the truck.
