What you might miss out on.

We plan on going home every couple of months to every four months and this means missing some events.

I was reminded of this recently when I celebrating my birthday.    Our daughter called to say a package had arrived at the house addressed to me.    I asked her if she would open the package and send me a picture of my gift.    This was the only way I was going to know what my birthday present was for several months.

We miss a lot of things while away from home and on the road, family picnics, Thanksgiving, sometimes Christmas, Birthdays, and other special events.   The question is how do you deal with this?

Our solution is to make the most of when we do see our family and friends.   While we have found we actually get to see distant friends and relatives more often we usually do not see them on holidays or special occasions.   Usually we find this to be a bonus as we have them all to ourselves and we can get caught up with each other with our undivided attention.

Every so often we find ourselves near family over a holiday or special occasion and this is a bonus.   It is fun to catch up with a lot of people quickly, but we usually leave exhausted and totally over stimulated.

We have also celebrated our anniversary on the road and family members usually ask us if we are going to do something special.   Our favorite reply is an emphatic NO as we want to be under a well paying load and we can do something special next time we are home.

Not being at home for a birthday or a holiday we have discovered is a minor inconvenience that we can easily live with.    In the case of my birthday present we are making plans when we are home at Christmas to have a fiesta featuring my birthday present!
