I saw this discussion on letstruck.com started by Kevin Rutherford and my first thought; Professionalism and everything else will follow.

Dictionary.com - Professional

1. Character, spirit, or methods

2. the standing, practice or methods of a professional as distinguished from an amateur.

When we take pride in the job and ourselves we are professionals. That feeling of a job well done leads us to want to learn more and to become even better.   Painting a picture that the public sees when they look up in the truck, when we walk across a parking lot, or what color do we add to the pallet?   Another thought I like to steal from camping is "leave the site clean or cleaner then when we arrived".

We veer towards like-minded individuals and slowly we glean what it really means to take our profession to the edge.  This reminds me of a pie and to become a complete professional the pie must be whole.   Each piece of the pie representing another segment of trucking that has to be complete.

There are many segments to the pie in my mind, which include but are not limited to:

Taking pride in our appearance including the truck

Taking pride in our manner of speech

Being informed of the issues

Compliance with regulations and knowledge of impending regulations

Compliance with our company’s policies

Involvement within the trucking industry

Continue to learn about an ever-changing industry

Are we there yet? No Do we continue to reach our professional goal? Yes

Some of the segments are very difficult for us and have involved a lot of self-struggles to change our way of thinking and doing business.   Each segment of the pie has many nuances that are stepping-stones to becoming complete.

So what do we give back to our industry?

A safe and compliant truck

Knowledgeable & Courteous drivers

Sharing knowledge with other drivers

Professional image to the public

What do you give back?
