All federal disbursements and receipts will transition to electronic payments by September 30, 2025. This means paper checks will no longer be accepted for tax payments.

This is part of an Executive Order issued earlier this year. The IRS is still working to fully implement these new rules.

We have transitioned to making or quarterly payments starting with the September 15th payment.  We also have scheduled the January 15th 2026 one also.  So, no worries on getting future ones out.  Our plan is for Tax Year 2026 is to schedule all of them at one time.

Electronic Tax Payment Options

There are several options available:

  • IRS Direct Pay: This tool allows individual taxpayers to pay taxes directly from their checking or savings accounts without any fees or pre-registration. Learn More Here.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS): This system offers two primary methods:

  • EFTPS-Direct (Automated Clearing House (ACH) Debits): Taxpayers initiate an electronic funds withdrawal by phone or online.
  • EFTPS-Through a Financial Institution (ACH Credits): Taxpayers instruct their financial institution to send a payment directly to the Treasury’s account.

The processing time for new EFTPS enrollments can take up to five business days to process. From there:

  • You will receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) by mail within seven business days.
  • The PIN comes with instructions to assign a password.

Credit or Debit Card Payments: Taxpayers can use IRS-approved credit or debit cards to pay certain types of tax liabilities. However, there may be fees associated with this method.

Electronic Funds Withdrawal: This is an integrated e-file/e-pay option available when filing federal taxes using tax preparation software. It allows for direct debit from a designated bank account. This can be set up during the preparation of your tax return.

Same-day Wire Transfer: If you need to make a payment on the same day, this option is available through your financial institution. However, fees may apply, and there may be specific cut-off times for initiating the transfer.

We have found that our state now has a system that allows for electronic payments also.  So, no more writing and mailing checks to either the federal or state.  Our state system also allows us to schedule payment in the future.  So, these we will also schedule all quarterly payments at one time.
