Continuing education is something we believe is essential to our business and we learn in many different ways; Workshops, seminars, reading, radio, and when available education courses on our business of trucking.   We can never learn enough and sometimes I feel the more I learn the more I need to learn.

Education specific to trucking is not readily available and not something we go down to Barnes & Noble to pickup a book.   There are a lot of books on how to run a successful business that usually involves a lot of customers not just one like we have being leased to a carrier.

As Expediters this complicates the issue some, we still follow the rules of trucking and then we add a few more rules.   First we need to understand trucking and this applies to drivers as well as owner operators.

A good website about trucking in general is Team Run Smart  as there are many articles from industry leaders about the trucking industry, and there are blogs from drivers that are living the lifestyle and running successful businesses.

There is also Expediters Online that is the number one source for information about Expediting.   The EO website has articles as well as very active forums that are invaluable to research the industry as well as carriers. This is also a good place to ask questions.

Expediters University is held in three different states during the year and is a good introduction to Expediting and trucking in general.   The next one will be held October 3, in Indianapolis, IN.   EO University The best way to learn about Expediting is to attend the Expedite Expo and the Expo is great for current Expediters as well as anyone considering joining the ranks.   The Expo will be held July 26th and 27th in Wilmington, OH

Another source of education about trucking in general is Kevin Rutherford's continuing education through live events as well as study guides.   We have attended two of Kevin's Certified Master Contractor (CMC) seminars and someday we will attend another one to keep fine-tuning our business model.   Our first CMC consisted of two jam-packed days and now the latest seminars are four days and they are still a long day and we always go away from these events brain dead and with lots of notes.

CMC Registration Sept 9th - 13th, Kansas City

STOP Holding the Steering Wheel & START Driving your Business is an interactive course that includes a workbook, 2 DVD's, and 4 Audio CD's.   This education series will benefit anyone in the trucking business and I think in many ways will really benefit expediters.   Expediting is a small niche within trucking and while following the main principles of truckload carriers we bring our own differences.

The interactive course of Kevin's hits many key areas that will make any business successful and I like how he presents this series.   I first listened to the audio CD's, then I watched the DVD's, and now I am going back through the audio CD's and using the workbook/study guide.

Purchase "Let go of the Steering Wheel & Start Driving your Business"

Make sure and let them know you are an expediter if you purchase.

I highly recommend all of the above as ways to stay tuned in and get the most out of the business of trucking.   As Kevin say's "Let go of the Steering Wheel & start Driving your Business!"
