Quidditch or Solar Panels

Just south of Las Vegas are three very odd structures that looked like might be towers for Harry Potter's Quidditch game.   They are huge and I have never seen anything like them. I was finally not driving when we went past them and was able to take a picture.

I was a little surprised when I searched for the towers and found out that this is a solar power facility.   So much for my imagination.   The estimated expense of this project is $2.2 billion dollars.

In the distance you can see the Clark Mountain Range and I read that the billion-dollar project was stopped for a few months due to the impact on the desert tortoises.

The developers are Bright Source Energy and Bechtel and the towers are called "Luz Power Tower 550 Technology".   (LPT 550) The LPT 550 produced electricity by creating high temperature steam to turn a turbine.   Bright Source uses thousands of mirrors, called heliostats to reflect sunlight onto a receiver, filled with water that sits atop the tower.

The towers are supposed to start commercial operation in mid 2013.   The LPT 550 when in operation will become extremely hot and will glow or appear brightly lit.   My imagination thinks there will be many calls about space aliens as I imagine the balls will look like they are hovering above the ground.   It will be interesting to see them in the near future.
