Purses Yes or No?

This topic came up the other day about purses, trucks, and truck stops and thoughts about carrying a purse.

Purses have never been high on my list of things I want to carry, but at times they sure come in handy.   In the winter my coat serves as my purse, pockets contain my money, my phone, and my driver’s license if needed.

My drivers is usually used when picking up a load and I keep my health card, company ID, TWIC Card, certificate of Hazmat training, and my drivers license in an easily accessible pouch.   This has worked well for us as when either of us gets out of the truck to talk with the customer we can grab this packet for the customer.

Walking through a truck stop on my own day or night the last thing I want hanging off my shoulder is a purse.   When I stop at night at a truck stop to use the rest room I pull into the fuel islands and pull through so I can quickly run inside.   If we are parking for the night I do not go through the truck stop alone unless the roadway is well lit.

While I think I have a pretty cool purse that usually gathers dust in the truck I only like to carry it in special circumstances.   One of my phobias about carrying a purse involves a story of a friend of ours.    She worked inside a small store inside a mall, one night after work and on her way to her car she was accosted.   The thief beat her to an inch of her life to get her purse that had that day’s income inside.   He changed her life forever, she started having seizures and could no longer drive, she had enough head trauma that she has a few other medical problems, and she always has the fear it might happen again.   We see some seedy people around truck stops that are not drivers and I personally do not want to take a chance.

If I was to carry a purse it would be small and something that could be held close to my body, not something swinging around in plain site.   I would also not carry a designer bag the purse would be non descript and very boring in color.   We have enough to worry about out here to stay safe and I do not want to worry about a purse!

What are your thoughts on purses?
