Recently we had a friend ask us about personal conveyance.  We do not know much about how we are allowed to use it since we do not use it as a team operation.  We have only every used it once and that was back in 2017 just to say we tried it once.  We used it to go to the grocery store to stock up on food and then went right back to the truck stop.  The carrier we were leased to at the time only allowed 30 minutes for a driver to use personal conveyance.  The grocery store was 20 minutes from the truck stop so both of use had to drive.

Right from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website it states: “Personal conveyance is the movement of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) for personal use while off-duty. A driver may record time operating a CMV for personal conveyance as off-duty only when the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work by the motor carrier. The CMV may be used for personal conveyance even if it is laden, since the load is not being transported for the commercial benefit of the motor carrier at that time. Personal conveyance does not reduce a driver’s or motor carrier’s responsibility to operate a CMV safely. Motor carriers can establish personal conveyance limitations either within the scope of, or more restrictive than, the guidance.”

So, what can you use personal conveyance for?????  Here is a list of what is allowed:

·         Travel from lodging area (Truck Stop, Hotel, etc) to eating establishments, entertainment, grocery shopping, etc.

·         Commuting to place of residents from trailer drop lots and work sites and will require the required rest break.

·         Traveling to nearby safe location after loading or unloading for required rest break.

·         At the request of safety to move a CMV during drivers off duty hours.

What can you not use personal conveyance for?????  Here is that list that is not allowed:

·         You can not advance the CMV for loading or unloading.

·         Interstate commerce in order to fulfill a business purpose, including bobtailing or operating with an empty trailer in order to retrieve another load or repositioning a CMV.

·         Moving CMV for maintenance.

For more information on this subject the FMCSA has a good website the has information about personal conveyance.
