We are two months into 2013 and how many of us are still working on goals we set at the beginning of 2013?   How many goals have been cast aside and we label ourselves as losers since we cannot stick to our objective?

I received an email from Harry Che and I thought he summed this up nicely:

If our goal is to lose 10 pounds, when we only lost two pounds, we tend to think this is a failure because we didn't reach the goal. But in reality we actually lost two pounds. We've ended up better than if we hadn't set and worked on this goal at all.

Harry goes on to talk about motivation and the energy to press on when we only partially obtain our objective.   When we set goals we tend to think only in completion and consider a partial success a sign of failing.   This is a powerful thought to me as not reaching the "goal" is not a reason to give up and beat myself over the head.   Giving up is not an option.

Sometimes to get reenergized it is best to step back, breath, look at our goals again and see if they are realistic.   Did we take everything into consideration or were we over ambitious?   Is it realist to think we can pay off all of our debts in one year?   Is it realistic that we can walk 50 miles a week?  The bar needs to be set high enough that we are out of comfort zone.

This quote from Winston Churchill sums it up nicely:

"Success is going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm."

It took me many tries over several years, a lot of money, and a lot of will power to finally give up smoking.   It was an ongoing battle and one that I lost often before finally 15 years ago I was able to lay down my cigarettes for good.

Celebrate the fact that we set goals and celebrate even the smallest success!
