Heading into a Hurricane

Each hurricane is different, some have a lot of wind damage, others have water damage, and others can have both.  Do your own research when going into the affected areas.  Find the state road maps to see what roads are closed and plan your route accordingly.

Watching the news can be disheartening as we watch the news reporters braving the high winds or the deep waters to give their sensational heroic reports.  Watching one live report on hurricane Florence as the news reporter battled the winds and barely being able to hold his own two young men strolled behind him with their hands in their pockets walking erect with no problems. The reported looked like a fool. Another live report not with hurricane Florence showed a lady in a rowboat giving the impression the water was very deep when someone walked in front of her and the water was barely to their ankles.  So, my advice, don’t watch the news reports. What you do need to watch is where the storm is tracking and what area of the storm you will be in then pull up local road maps.

On the way to the area that is affected fill up your fuel and def tanks, if you carry water, fill up with water, and get cash.  If the electricity is out some places will continue to sell products for cash.  You want enough fuel to be able to get into the area and then back out without having to purchase fuel.  Stock up on some food as there probably isn’t going to be a place to eat where you can get the truck into if there is flooding.

Using only the GPS can get you into trouble and in some situations, the GPS is just about worthless as it wants to route you down roads that are closed.  Using the state maps, hard copy map, and the GPS on your phone can help you to route around closed roads.  The state maps need to be checked often as the situation changes from either bad to good or from good to closed.

Stay calm, don’t drive through a flooded road, and do not watch the crazy news people on TV who are trying to make a story up when they cannot find one or they are looking for the very worst of the worst to report on.  Look at the state maps and the weather report that is tracking the storm and look out your windshield to see what is actually happening.
