Over our trucking career we have stayed away from home over Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Both holidays traditionally have been family gatherings with a lot of laughter and fun.   Our youngest daughter could not be home for Thanksgiving one year and next our oldest daughter could not get off  work for Christmas so we determined to celebrate Christmas on New Years Day.   Not being home for Thanksgiving was not to much of a hardship due to the truck stops having a wonderful turkey dinner on their buffet.   Staying out over Christmas was much rougher as this day has always been very special to us.   On Christmas day that year there was very little traffic and not much open and to top all that we did not have a load.

Thanksgiving in the past was a huge family event that we always enjoyed.   We spent the day with Bob's mom and his large family eating, playing games, eating, playing games....   and it was very enjoyable.   Once we moved away from the rest of the family we made the choice to work Thanksgiving and enjoy our family time with our girls during Christmas and New Years Eve.

The TA/Petro's all over the country have a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner and I was surprised to see how many local people could be found eating at the truck stop.   Our first year away from home on Thanksgiving we were in upper New York and I will never forget this older couple that came in dressed to the 9's.   He was in a suit and tie and she was in a beautiful dress and I wondered why in the world they were eating at a truck stop.   I did not have to wonder long once I went through the buffet and tasted the food.   It was very good and the price was also reasonable.   Then I looked over at the well-dressed couple and I realized how much a Thanksgiving feast of the type we were enjoyed would cost them and also how much food would be leftovers.   They were smart and from the looks of them they were enjoying themselves as much as we were.

We will once again be away from home over Thanksgiving and right now not sure what part of the country we will be in, but I hope to heck there will be a TA/Petro where we can enjoy a fantastic Thanksgiving meal.   We appreciate the waitresses and cooks who have to work on this day and a little extra is always left in a tip for them to enjoy.

As always I have a few decorations in the truck and these are some of my favorites and they have many miles under their little feet!
