Facebook - Friend or Foe

Recently we took a much-needed vacation and I decided to put my phone down and enjoy my surroundings.  I noticed several things immediately and how much of a habit it has become the minute I stop, sit, or stand, I pick up my phone often not caring what is going on around me.

Things I noticed:

  • Everyone around you is usually on the phone and you are odd man out
  • I found a sign that irritated me but did not take a picture to share with my friends so I could stay irritated.  Instead I moved on and now cannot remember the sign and it will not pop up in my facebook memories
  • While riding in the car I was looking at the scenery instead of my phone
  • When I got bored waiting in line I looked around at other people instead of my phone for entertainment.
  • Back home from the vacation while not all the way back to my old ways I am finding myself falling back into bad habits.

There is a lot of good information on Facebook that benefits our business as well as keeping up with distant family and friends.

I believe there is a place for Facebook and it will stay a part of my life but I am more aware than I was of how much I use it as a crutch to not get bored.  Scrolling through Facebook at other times is almost a brain-numbing exercise. I hope to continue to look at Facebook for what I need and then put the phone down and move on to something more productive.
