Beach ND is no beach

We pulled into the Flying J in Beach, ND on I-94 exit 1 and there was white everywhere!   Wow, how cool (and cool was the key word) as the white was not sand, but snow and lots and lots of it.   My gosh what a mess as there were piles of snow everywhere.   The snow was melting with small rivers going in all directions.   I left the Flying J as a fast walk going south over the top of a hill that was hiding the little town.   I was in for a nice surprise as the town reminded me of our small town where we raised our girls in Kansas.   There, over on the outskirts of town, was a grain elevator with railroad tracks.   The town was pretty near a ghost town with no traffic as people were in their homes instead of out running around here and there.   I had a great walk through town and found a short stretch of sidewalk on the deserted main street.   As I passed by, one small business had a sign in the front window, “Will the last person that leaves Beach please turn out the lights” and I had to wonder if this small town will become a ghost town in the future?   I know our small town of Elkhart in Kansas is always struggling to stay alive and I believe this is a common theme.   One of the great things I enjoy about getting out and walking is being able to find little hidden areas like Beach, ND.
