Comfort Zone

Last week we had the opportunity to celebrate Truck Driver Appreciation Week with the company to whom we are leased. This was our seventh year of attending “BCO Days.” BCO stands for Business Capacity Owner. The company understands that we are all business owners and treats us as such. The company also uses Driver Appreciation Week as an opportunity to show how much it appreciates all that we do for it. The company selects a different location in the country every year. Each driver is given a hotel room for the night. There are informative meetings on various topics as well as an update on company performance by the CEO. The event lasts for two days with prizes given at the end of each day. On the final day, a semi is given away to some unsuspecting driver. This year the company gave away its 52nd semi.

While seeing someone win a semi is exciting, meeting friends and making new connections is the highlight of our time at this event. People are who stretch us to be the best that we can be. In return, our hope is that we can return the favor or pay it forward. This year my personal comfort zone was stretched before the event as well as after the event. I am not much of a pool person; however, I did put on a very gaudy swimsuit and we made our way to the pool.

After the event was over, several of us made our way to a bar that had karaoke night. While I have done karaoke in the past, I did not sing that night. However, I was dragged out onto the dance floor. While I have a lot of musical background, my body does not seem to know how to move to the music. When the song began it was just me and a new friend who felt the need to stretch my comfort zone. By the end of the song, a complete stranger as well as other friends had joined us. Several had come up to me afterwards to compliment me on getting out of my comfort zone to do the dance.

This got me to thinking about how business owners stretch themselves out of their comfort zone to begin a business or grow their business. In what ways did you have to go outside of your comfort zone to begin your business? In what other ways did you stepped out of your comfort zone to grow your business? Did your comfort zone boundaries prevent you from doing something that might have grown your or your business? I always thought that I would keep learning until my life was over. As I get older, my thoughts have changed to consider that I might even learn new things in the afterlife. As long as we are breathing air we should strive to grow outside of our comfort zone.

Here’s to safe, profitable and COMFORTABLE miles.
