Fuel for Thought
Trucks Don’t Run on Fuel Alone
Fuel prices are climbing again, and everyone’s staring at the pump like it personally insulted them. I get it. When diesel fuel prices spike, every driver suddenly becomes a human calculator, punching numbers in their head like they’re trying to crack a safe before the timer hits zero. But while everyone is laser focused on the fuel bill, there’s a quiet little monster lurking in the background that’s going to bite a lot of folks later: maintenance. Yep, that thing that too many drivers don’t think about until something starts smoking, squealing, or leaking in a way that definitely wasn’t happening yesterday.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking fuel is the only expense that matters right now. After all, it’s the one you see every single day. Swipe the card, watch the numbers spin, try not to cry or punch the pump, but maintenance doesn’t care that diesel costs are high. Maintenance is not patient and will not always wait. And when it shows up, it doesn’t knock politely. It kicks the door in and demands payment in full. Tires, brakes, oil changes, sensors, DEF systems and the mystery rattle you’ve been ignoring for six months, they’re all still coming whether fuel is five, six or seven bucks a gallon or not.
That’s why when you’re accepting loads, you can’t just look at whether the rate covers the fuel to get there. That’s rookie math. You’ve got to make sure it covers the whole cost of running the truck, including the stuff you won’t feel until later. If the load only pays enough to keep the tank full but not enough to keep the truck maintained, you’re not making money. You’re just delaying the moment when you realize you’re broke. Make smart decisions, not emotional ones.
And while we’re on the topic of money, let’s talk about chrome. I know, I know. It’s shiny. It’s beautiful. Who among us can’t appreciate the polished look of a well put together chromed out truck? It makes you feel like the king of the parking lot. But chrome doesn’t pay the bills. Chrome doesn’t fix a blown tire. Chrome doesn’t keep you rolling when a belt snaps in the middle of nowhere. Chrome is a want, not a need, and when costs are up, it’s amazing how many wants suddenly look like they can wait. There will be plenty of time to make the truck pretty later. Right now, the priority is keeping it running. As the old saying goes…chrome won’t get you home.
So while everyone else is panicking about fuel, be the one who’s thinking ahead. Put a little aside for the stuff that’s coming. Because it is coming. And when it does, you’ll be glad you planned for it instead of staring at a repair bill wondering where all your money went. Fuel may be the loudest expense, but it’s not the only one. Don’t let the quiet ones sneak up on you.
