Fuel for Thought

Spoiled

The winter of 2009 we had an Espar heater installed that we had received on trade from a friend of ours. I was happier than a pig in mud. No more waking up in the middle of the night freezing. No more having to wear 8 layers of clothes to bed. I don't do sleeping bags, they freak me out, so that was never even an option. I got used to wearing light weight pajamas, no socks, and barely ever even having to cover up. It had kept us plenty warm the many times that the wind chills dropped below zero. Tuesday afternoon, the Espar decided it had lived its life and passed on to heater heaven. Of course it had to be 19 degrees that night. That was when I realized that the luxury of having the Espar had completely made me spoiled.

Wednesday morning we headed over to Thermo King to see if they could fix it, and unfortunately, due to it being such and old unit, it was going to be more cost effective to replace it, so we did. They said based off from the serial numbers, and the ECM of the unit, that the heater was 9-10 years old, instead of the estimated 7 that we had thought. It served its function very well. I calculated that had we bought the unit brand new and had it installed that it would have cost us approximately $11 per month for the last 10 years. Defintately way less than the cost of fuel idiling, even if only used in the winter time.

If anyone is on the fence about getting one don't be. Take it from me, I would NEVER go another winter without one. Last night I slept like a baby; spoiled, nice and cozy warm.
