Fuel for Thought
Heading home
For the last few days Nick and I have been up in my hometown. A little town called Remus. Its halfway between Mt Pleasant and Big Rapids. There isn't much besides corn and cows in Remus, you can barely even keep a cell phone signal. We have one traffic light in the middle of town where M20 & M66 meet. It is a peaceful place where you can open the windows on a cool summer night and hear nothing but crickets and frogs, you can see the stars so clearly. It is truly beautiful.
You can still leave your doors unlocked and have nothing to worry about. The little restaurant in town, Helen's, slogan is "where great friends meet to eat" and that's the truth. Everyone in there knows your name. Any given day you can find the men at the "community" table BSing about the latest hunting or fishing trip and the little old ladies drinking their coffee and tea gossiping.
Not much happens up there, and opening day of rifle deer season is a town holiday. Every September, the weekend after Labor Day, the town comes to life when thousands of people pack into fields for camping and a large Bluegrass Festival called Wheatland. I grew up going to the festival, even after I moved away in 1997. This year will be the 38th one!
As most of you know, Nick and I are in the process of saving money to buy a house, and this is the area we can't wait to move to.
