Frozen in time

The days are shorter, and the nights are longer. It feels as if things are frozen in time, and that they are frozen in the dark. The runs that were still daylight when it was 8 at night are a thing of the past, for a few more months. It is dark at 5 and makes the night seem to drag on. Its almost as if you are stuck in a twillight zone. That also means that the colder weather is upon us.

Three years ago we wre so lucky that we stayed south of I-40 almost all winter long. We only saw snow when we came home from Christmas and New Years. It was great. No bad weather, great money, and never really cold. If only we could get that lucky every year. Two years ago we were on the New York Thru-way headed west. We were less than 1 mile from the last toll booth and it came to a stand still. It had been slow going since the last service plaza. We didn't stop there, knowing if we did we would have been stuck. Whether it had been plowed in, snowed in, or blocked in. There were trucks and cars parking where ever they could. We trecked on in the literal blinding, blowing snow, moving at a great speed of 15 miles per hour. The driving conditions were horrible, but we felt safe as long as we were moving. The line of trucks behind us was amazing, somehow we always end up in the lead. The temperature was about 10* and the wind was blowing at a constant 40 mph. As we stopped, we snuggled up behind a trailer to try to block some of the wind so we could keep the engine warm to provide us with heat, since we didn't have the Espar at that time. Nick kept telling me to just come get in bed with him to stay warm, as we were going to be there for a while. I didnt want to. I was afraid that traffic would start moving and we would be left on the highway. Finally, after about 3 hours of sitting in the front seat, and my toes getting cold, I crawled in bed and went to sleep. About 7 hours later the police came and knocked on the window to let us know that they were opening a side road and we could get off there. It took us 4 hours to go about 40 miles on unplowed roads. We got to our delivery, outside of Pittsburgh and the weather was perfect.

We have seen little flurries of snow here and there, but have not encountered the full effects of winter weather yet. I am not looking forward to it.
