A mini vacation

Friday morning we delivered a load in southern Florida. On the way down here we talked about what we would do if we did not get loaded out immediately. We came to the decision that we were going to take a little bit of a break and head down to the Keys, since I had never been there. Friday we waited anxiously to see if the we were going to be loaded out. When 11 am rolled around Saturday, it was time to pack up and head south. Our goal was to get to Key West, walk around for a bit, and then stay on one of the keys Saturday night, and spend most of Sunday at the beach before heading back to the Miami area.

Now, I am horribly afraid of bridges, so I knew that this trip was going to be an interesting one for me. I also took all kinds of pictures on the way down and back. I had never seen the Everglades before, so that was a treat for me as well, but I was hoping to see an Alligator. I have a fascination with them, unfortunately I didn't.

We stopped at one of the little tourist shops along the way for me to buy some psot cards to add to my huge collection. While we were there we spoke with a women who told us about Bahia Honda State Park. After talking to her, and doing some research, I learned that Bahia Honda had been named one of the top 10 beaches in the United States by The Travel Channel.  We decided that Bahia is where we were going to spend Sunday.

As we travelled south, the little bridges didn't bother me too much, but then came the 7 Mile bridge. I am pretty sure I held my breath many times over that bridge and tried occupying myself by taking pictures. 807.JPG

Once we reached Key West we found old town and parked. While in the parking lot I encountered the chickens! I had so much feeding them. 893.JPG

From there we walked around for a while, and then headed to Hog's Breath Saloon to have dinner. I had Conch fritters and coconut shrimp. Nick had shrimp civeche and a shrimp po boy. The food was good, but we were quite hot. So we decided that we were going to walk back to the van, drive around a bit and head north. The island was very crowded, and I don't do well with large crowds. I guess living in a van has made me quite the hermit.

We headed north  and encountered an endangered species. The Key Deer. It was just standing in the middle of the road, so I was able to snap a few pictures of the little guy.942.JPG We then found ourselves a place to watch the sunset before heading to a little place called the Sandpiper Motel to stay at for the night. 960.JPG

Our trip to Bahia Honda will be next!
