Fuel for Thought

As our two year anniversary approaches I spend a lot of time thinking about the load that changed our lives forever. I will never forget it. We were laying in bed, still asleep on Monday, December 28, 2009. The phone rang with the familiar ringtone of Tri-State. We were out of service, so we were not sure why they were calling, but Nick reluctantly answered the phone anyway. The dispatcher said she had a load for us going to California, and that we had until January 4th, 2010 to deliver it. We debated on taking it, as we had a vaction planned in Traverse City, but had not paid for anything so we decided what the heck, and we could stop in Las Vegas for a a good time on our way out.

We made the decision to go across 44 and 40 to avoid some of the winter weather that we were inevitably going to encounter. We knew that we were going to be going to Las Vegas, but did not have the plans to get married. We were planning a big elaborate wedding in Florida. At some point along the journey in Arizona, we agreed that when we got into Las Vegas we were going to go buy our wedding bands, a pair of dress shoes for myself, get our marriage license and take the big plunge on New Years Eve in Sin City. I was then busy making phone calls, trying to find a wedding chapel that had an opening for us. We figured that getting married this way we could do it how ever we wanted, no one could say anything about any of it. That they could just be happy for the fact that we were married, and love each other.
After our trip to Wal-Mart and payless, we headed to stand in line. Little did I know, I could have registered us online and not have to wait for 2 and 1/2 hrs. Then we headed over to The Orleans, where we would be staying, since it had secured truck parking, shuttles to and from the strip, and a decent rate, since it was NYE. I scurried around taking a shower, and attempting to do my hair, which of course when you are trying, never works. Nick went and got us a pizza from the food court. Then it was his turn to shower, and run down to the lobby to catch a cab to Allure Wedding Chapel. I was so nervous, I remember standing there shaking and holding back the tears. I was so afraid that he was going to say no instead of I do.

When it was all said and done we tried to get a cab back to the hotel, but since the strip was shut down for fireworks later on in the night, there were no cabs. Our photographer from the ceremony took us back to the hotel since it was on her way home. We were very thankful for that. By the time we got back to the hotel and changed, it was almost midnight on the east coast. We started making our phone calls to wish everyone happy new year, and to tell them the news that we got married. Most everyone was ecstatic for us. Then we changed and took a shuttle to the strip so we could watch the fireworks that Nick promised me I could have for our wedding.

The rest of the weekend was filled with touring various casinos before we headed west Sunday night. I will never forget the phone call that changed it all <3
